Laura Ruth Hendrix

Laura was born December 3, 1930 to Lillie Ruth (nee Rodgers) and James S. Sanders in Vinita, Oklahoma. Laura’s youth was spent primarily in Ponca City and Vinita, Oklahoma as well as Sulphur Springs, Arkansas. She attended North Oklahoma Junior College and later moved to Denver Colorado where she began working. It was there in Denver that she met Tom Hendrix. They married on July 2nd, 1954 at Lowry Air Force Base. Their union was later blessed with their son Kurt.

During their time with the Air Force, the family enjoyed living in many different locations including the Philippines, Wichita Falls, Germany, Virginia, and finally settling in San Antonio, Texas. While based in Germany, they traveled throughout Europe, building wonderful memories and frequently camping along the way with their pop-up camper.

Laura was a long-time member of MacArthur Park Church of Christ where she developed many friendships over the years. After Tom’s passing, she enjoyed volunteering in the church office; traveling to Branson, Missouri and the Canadian Rockies; and many pot luck meals with the Silver Servers. Laura had an especially tender heart for small children and cats - the young children that she fostered brought her great joy as did the many cats that she cared for over the years.

Her grandchildren have many fond memories of her arriving at their home at Christmas time with the back of her station wagon filled with a multitude of thoughtfully chosen gifts that were always beautifully wrapped. Laura was preceded in death by her mother, Lillie Ruth Cobb; her husband Thomas Gilbert Hendrix, and her son, Kurt Jeffrey Hendrix. She is survived by her three grandchildren, daughter-in-law, and three nieces/nephews.

A memorial service will be held December 7th at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway.
