

He served 20 honorable years in and retired from the United States Air Force. Afterwards, he completed his B.S. in accounting at the University of Tampa in 1975. Upon completion of his degree he worked in a public accounting firm and at Jim Walters Corporation. During this time he earned his CPA and then served an additional 20 years in the civil service for the United States Air Force Audit agency where he retired as the Director of Acquisition and Logistics Audits. He earned an additional degree in Master of Science in Administration in 1991 at the Central Michigan University. Finally he retired for the third time as the Director of Internal Audit of the North East Independent School District. He was an avid and passionate gardener and had a keen sense of intellectual curiosity that he expressed through reading and continuous learning throughout his life.
He will be dearly missed by his devoted wife Lela and family members. He was preceded in death by his parents Carroll Vernon Powers and Rose Elizabeth Powers; brothers, Billy Powers and Jerry Powers. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lela M. Powers of San Antonio, TX, daughter, Peggy Ann Fraser of Newport Richey, FL; son, Larry E. Powers and his wife Inaria D. Powers, of Tampa, FL; granddaughter, Stefanie Grider of Newport Richey, FL; great grandson, Carson Grider of Newport Richey, FL; brother, Bobby Powers and his wife Mary, of Orlando, FL; brother, Donny Powers and his wife Polly, of Atlanta, GA, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends and loved ones.
