

Lester M. Lande, age 80, of San Antonio, died Saturday, July 21, 2001. He was born January 15, 1921 in Pittsburgh, PA. After moving to Cleveland, New York and Chicago with his parents, he settled down in San Antonio. He graduated from East High School in Cleveland and attended Case School of Applied Science. Mr. Lande worked in the Service Engineering Dept. of Thompson Products, before joining the U.S. Army. He served 3 ½ years in the Army, 33 months of which he was stationed in Iran. Following his discharge from the service, he joined his father's food brokerage business in San Antonio. Mr. Lande showed an avid interest in photography, which resulted in his accepting a position as a photographer in a portrait studio, which also involved shooting large groups on location. In 1948, he married Marjorie Wulfe. An exuberant Cathy Ellen was born two years later. He started the Lande Studio in 1950, of which he was owner and operator for 25 years, doing portraits, commercial photography, advertising and illustrative work. His hobbies were: golf, reading and philately. He was a life member of the Texas Professional Photographer's Association, where he served as Vice-President and served as President of the San Antonio Professional Photographer's Guild. He was a member of the Southwestern Photographers Assn. and the Professional Photographers of America, receiving 17 merit awards. He also served as Director of the San Antonio Optimist Club, and Director of B'nai B'rith Lodge #211. He was also a member of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business. Mr. Lande also taught summer photography classes at Trinity University. Upon his retirement, he became very actively involved in the philatelic community. Mr. Lande was a member of the San Antonio Philatelic Assn., Texas Philatelic Assn. And American Philatelic Society. He won numerous awards for his extensive exhibits for over 15 years. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie W. Lande; daughter, Cathy Guettner and husband, Reggie; granddaughter, Allison Michelle Guettner, all of Yoakum, TX; numerous nieces and nephews.
