

Light Townsend Cummins D.D.S. was born in San Antonio on February 15, 1916 and passed away at the Chandler Estate in the Alamo City on May 22, 2017 at the age of 101. He was the son of Light T. Cummins and Alta Crook Cummins. He graduated from the San Antonio Academy and Texas Military Institute before receiving a B.B.A. from the University of Texas. He was president of University of Texas student body during his senior year and belonged to the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He received a D.D.S. from Baylor Dental School and served as a member of the United States Army Dental Corps during World War II. He spent his entire professional career as a dentist in private practice. He was active in numerous organizations, including serving on the board of directors Texas Military Institute, the San Antonio District Dental Society, the Texas Dental Association, Mended Hearts, and the Christian Assistance Ministry. He was chair of the Selective Service Boards of Bexar County from the 1950s to the 1970s, for which he received a Presidential Citation. He was the owner of Rebalta Farms in Lavaca County. In his retirement years, Cummins volunteered at various charities and maintained an active participation the Sons of the Republic of Texas and the Sons of the American Revolution. He particularly enjoyed following University of Texas football, which he did avidly. He attended St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where he was proud of his service on the vestry. In 1945, he married Roberta Kelley Cummins of Shelton, Connecticut and, after her passing in 1980; he married Alice Matheson of San Antonio, both of whom preceded him in death in addition to his parents, son Bobbe Kelley Cummins and sister Mannti Cummins Biard. He is survived by Drs. Light and Victoria Cummins of Sherman, Texas, Mannti Cummins and Blanca Maria Cummins of Corpus Christi, grandchildren Katherine Schmitz and her husband Michael of Denton, Leslie Johanna Cummins of Fort Worth, Sarah Cummins and Samantha Cummins of Corpus Christi, and great grandson Reaugh Kelley Schmitz of Denton. He is also survived by his special friend and companion Melva Brannon. The family extends its appreciation to the Alamo Hospice and Helping Our Seniors. Graveside services to be held at Sunset Memorial Park at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 27. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his honor to a charity of your choice.
