She graduated from Alpine High School and Sul Ross College with honors. Following graduation, she taught school in Marathon, Texas. After moving to San Antonio, she taught at Draughn's Business College and Burbank High School until she retired from teaching. She worked as Office Manager for Mussellman Oil Company.
She was a devout Methodist and a member of the McKinley Avenue United Methodist Church for forty years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anita Butand Sonnier; brothers, Harold, Howard and Christian Sonnier; sister, Mildred Waguespack, and cousin, Sister James Aloysius.
She is survived by her son, Hubert Joseph "Jody" Smart; her special grandsons, Grant and Logan Smart; nieces, Nita Jo Elrod, and Gladys Ann Chadwell. Also surviving are her pet companions, Roco and Coral. A private graveside service will be held for the family.
