Lucille Elizabeth Holguin Polan passed away peacefully on July 3, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 91. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to everyone. Lucille was born on February 12, 1933, in Shafter, Texas to Carlos Ruben Holguin and Sophie Johns Holguin. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Jean Polan; her eldest son Kenneth Wayne Polan; parents, Carlos and Sophie; siblings, Hortense, Martha, Louis, Albert, and Peter. She is survived by her daughter, Geneva Polan Daigle (Gerald John Jr); son Randy Polan (Barbara); daughter-in-law Grace Butler Polan; grandchildren, Caroline Polan, Benjamin Polan, Gerald Daigle III, Snowy Trowbridge; siblings, Josephine Bartoli (Kearny) and Omar Holguin (Irene) as well as many nieces and nephews.
Lucille spent her formative years in San Antonio where she graduated from Incarnate Word High School Class of 1951. She married the love of her life in 1955. The love story between Lucille and her beloved late husband, Robert Polan, was one filled with shared passions and adventures. Together, they opened Sherri Ann Kennels and became very involved in the dog show circuit across the US, breeding/handling champion dogs and pouring their combined love and expertise into the dogs they cared for. Their partnership extended to opening Sherri Ann Nursery, a large wholesale nursery, where Lucille's love for plants thrived. These plants were placed in many buildings, restaurants and malls around the city. She also enjoyed selling plants to the public at many of the local flea markets. Lucille's enthusiasm for horticulture was more than just a pastime; it was a way of connecting with others who shared her love for the natural world. They were proud members of the San Antonio Cactus and Xerophyte Society. She leaves behind an addition to the xerophyte world as her loving husband propagated a specific variety of Sanseveria Hahnii officially named, ‘Lucille Polan’. The couple's joy in nurturing life, whether it be flora or fauna, was evident to all who knew them.
Lucille's zest for life extended beyond her professional and familial roles. She relished the simple pleasures of daily life, whether it was savoring a daily margarita, enjoying nightly bingo at Flamingo Bingo with friends, trying her luck at slot machines, or simply spending time with her family and friends. These moments, filled with laughter and camaraderie, are the times that will be most missed by those who knew her. Lucille's passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, we celebrate the life she lived and the profound impact she had on her family, friends, and community. Lucille Elizabeth Holguin Polan will be deeply missed but will remain forever in our hearts as a guiding light of joy, kindness and generosity.
The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 A.M., Monday, July 15, 2024 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
