

He was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico to Petronio and Esther Canales. In 1950, during his freshman year at the University of Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras, Luis met the love of his life, Digna Santos. After 7.5 years of courtship, the two were married at Iglesia Le Milagrosa Catholic Church in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico.
He enlisted in the US Army before graduating from the University of Puerto Rico Medical School in 1958. After completing his internship in Michigan, and his residency in Hawaii, he went to Ohio where he completed his fellowship in pediatric hematology and oncology. He spent 16 years at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), San Antonio, Texas (1967 to 1983) serving most of that time as chief of the department of pediatrics.
After completing a residency in radiology he spent 18 months as chief of the department at Darnell Army Medical Center, Fort Hood, Texas. After proudly serving in the military for 31 years, he retired in 1985 as a Colonel. He spent 15 years in College Station as chief of the radiology department for Scott and White Clinic.
He then moved back to San Antonio where he worked another 5 years at BAMC in the radiology department as an independent contractor before fully retiring in 2006. When not working, Luis enjoyed spending time with his family (especially his grandchildren) and playing dominos with his friends. He also had a passion for wood working and even built a special workshop to master his love of making guitars, tiples and quattros (specialty guitars from Puerto Rico).
Luis was preceded in death by, his daughter, Digna "Tita" Canales.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Digna Santos Canales; his son, Dr. Luis Iván Canales (wife, Dr. Sue Daye); his daughters, Rosa N. Canales and Edda M. Tschirhart (husband, Dr. Paul Tschirhart); grandchildren, Austin Siler, Christopher Tschirhart, Sky Tschirhart, Kristen Canales, Bianca Siler and Nicole Canales as well as other family members.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016 at Porter Loring North.
