Lyle E. Johnson, age 87, passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2021 in San Antonio. He was born on October 18, 1933 in Hurley, South Dakota, to parents, Ellius and Signa Larsen Johnson. Lyle attended Hurley High School in Hurley, South Dakota, and graduated with the Class of 1951.
Upon his graduation from high school, Lyle enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served 3 tours of duty to Korea during the Korean War on the USS Los Angeles heavy cruiser warship (from 1952-1956).
On January 8, 1956, Lyle married Joyce LaFaye Andersen at the First Baptist Church in Parker, South Dakota. They relocated to California, and Lyle attended and graduated in 1959 from Citrus College in Glendora, California. They went on to live and work in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Texas. Lyle had many achievements throughout his career, including promotion to Branch Manager of the San Antonio Johnson Controls office, and President of the Alamo Chapter of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers).
Lyle enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, yard work, and spending time with his 8 grandchildren (Joe Lopez, Matthew Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Austin Marchant, Emme Johnson, Joshua Marchant, Parker Johnson, and Ashley Marchant) who affectionately referred to him as Grandpa, Pa, or Big Pop. Lyle and Joyce have been active members of the Windcrest United Methodist Church since their move to Texas in 1981. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2021.
Lyle will be dearly missed by family and friends; his sense of humor, love of life and influence in all our lives will never be lost.
Lyle loved Jesus and was a believer. We take comfort knowing that he has entered those “Pearly Gates” he often spoke of. He asked that the following verses be shared as a comfort to all:
John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted
Romans 14:7-8 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.
1 John 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
Psalms 52:8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, and half-brother, Elmer Larsen. Lyle is survived by his wife, Joyce Johnson; children, Bradley Johnson and wife Kelly, Jolene Marchant and husband Kevin, and Brett Johnson and wife Norma Jean; brothers, Bob Johnson and wife Carol, Ben Johnson; sister, Carolyn Snow and husband Gary, his grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
