

U.S. Army (Retired), was 84 when he passed away November 19, 2015. He was born in San Antonio, TX on April 11, 1931. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray T. and Veola Murray Dixon. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Marilyn and his daughter, NancyX. He graduated from Jefferson H.S., class of 1948. He attended Texas A & M, St. Mary’s Univ., and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State Univ. He graduated from Officer Candidate School at Ft. Sill, OK and became a Field Artillery Officer.
During his 26 year military career, he was an Army Reserve Advisor, Protocol Officer, Adjutant, and Commander in various units. He saw duty in: Japan, California, Okinawa, Texas, Germany, New Jersey, and served two tours in Vietnam. Among the many military decorations he received were: the Bronze Star Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; and was authorized the Professional Insignia of German Air Force Missileman Gold Level . He also received, “The Order of the Silver Rose.”
After retirement, he volunteered for 20 years at the Institute of Texan Cultures library. His researching skills are recognized on the entrance’s plaque. His many hobbies included: genealogy (was a member of the S.A.R.); collected stamps & coins; and enjoyed reading, especially about underwater treasure hunting.
Graveside services were held November 25, 2015 at Ft. Sam Houston Nat’l Cemetery with full military honors, including the caisson, the horse-drawn carriage. Donations may be made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Humane Society of S.A. because he loved animals. The family would like to thank his many caregivers throughout the years. We hope you’ll remember his big smile and twinkling blue eyes!
