Marcelene Marie Gomez was born April 2, 1943 to Ray and Ottie Loghry in the southwest corner of Iowa in a small town called Blockton. Youngest of six children, she learned to be resourceful and generous, traits that served her well throughout the years. After living in four different states, she found herself in San Antonio, TX in 1980 and decided to make this lovely community her home. She had eleven nieces and nephews, fourteen greats, one god-daughter, in addition to her chosen daughter and four chosen grandchildren. Marcy was employed by AT&T (Southwestern Bell) for 27 years and enjoyed her 1998 retirement by giving her time, talents and treasure to others.
Marcy joined AT&T Telephone Pioneers in 1973. She participated in various activities, including craft items which were regularly taken to nursing home patients. They learned quilting techniques to present to BAMC's returning soldiers.
In 1986 Marcy joined Pipers Meadow Neighborhood Association. She was President for two years, chairing monthly meetings and assisting with newsletters. She worked front desk at Ronald McDonald House and participated in annual KLRN auction.
In 1991 Marcy joined St. PJ's Children's Home Auxiliary. She held every office except treasurer and was 3rd VP co-chairing the thrift store operation. They sponsor a booth at Holy Spirit craft show to raise money. She was especially proud of work she did as a mentor to several children over the years. One of the girls, Raquel has been with her for over 15 years. She calls Marcy "the mother she never had" and her four children call Marcy "Grandma."
Marcy has been active in Political Work since 1996, when she campaigned for two Councilmen. She worked with her favorite Councilwoman's office, hoping to make a difference in her neighbor's lives. She helped serve Thanksgiving dinner to policeman in her precinct. To her Gonzales family during Thanksgiving dinner she was known for her famous cream corn. And we were strictly instructed not to release the family recipe.
Marcy made The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary programs successful. When she joined in 1999, she had been active in its annual Doll and Bear Show for several years. This became her pet project. The annual Recycled Style Show was also a favorite. Gently used items are sorted and cleaned. A delightful show is choreographed, featuring Auxiliary women and San Antonio celebrities. She worked with The Salvation Army's Christmas Toy Shop, Angel Tree, Kettles and Family Registration. She took part in annual Yard Sale, benefiting The Salvation Army Peacock House Museum preservation.
One of the fun and beneficial groups Marcy supported was San Antonio SPURS Baseline Bums. Since 1999 she was not only a season pass holder, she helped distribute sponsor handouts, annual golf tournaments, Cheerleading/Dance clinics and annual Baby and Blanket Drive, benefiting Any Baby Can, Seton Home and homeless.
When she managed to find spare time, Marcy enjoyed the bi-annual bus trip to Coushatta. Those who participated will remember her back seat driving skills. Marci loved & danced to a variety of music but Tejano held a special place in her heart & was often playing in her car as she sang along.
Marcy was an angel to those who knew and loved her. Her infectious smile and selfless dedication were all that anyone could ask for. Her accepting, gentle, loving spirit knew no boundaries and her absence will be greatly felt.
We would like to thank "The Three Musketeers" (you know who you are), Salvation Army for providing reception hall, Melissa for slide show, Amy and Linda at Porter Loring, Albert at San Fernando, friends and extended family for their prayers, support & assistance before & during this difficult time.
Pallbearers: Erik Gonzales, Joe Abthony Gonzales, Sixto Cardenas, Chris Rivera, Carl Walker, Michael Trevino, Cruz Zertuche and Jimmy R. Gonzales.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a charitable donation be made to any of the above organizations in Marcy's honor.
