Margaret King "Betty" Anderson, age 87, passed into heavenly glory on Friday, June 24, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas. Betty was born on March 6, 1935, in San Antonio (exactly 99 years after the Battle of the Alamo) to Margaret (Deely) & William C. King.
Raised in San Antonio, Betty graduated from Jefferson High School and then attended the University of Texas where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. From her time at Jefferson and UT, she made many life-long friends. From these friendships emerged a weekly gathering known as "The Sewing Club" (they actually sewed, while also doing a lot of talking) that spanned 50 years of weekly get togethers. She loved her many friends, who became like extended family.
When Betty was making her debut, she was setup on a blind date to attend the opening German Club party with a young air force pilot named Clif Anderson. Their romance took off right away and they were married 6 months later. Their marriage lasted for 62 years until Clif passed away in 2019. They made a wonderful life together in San Antonio, raising two boys, Bryan and Whit.
Betty was a devoted mother who loved her sons. She spent countless hours driving them to their many swimming lessons, school activities, sporting events and other adventures. Later in life, she greatly enjoyed time spent with her two grandchildren, Abbey & Nicholas.
Betty loved the Texas Hill Country. In the 1950s, her parents bought a country house near Hunt, Texas on the Guadalupe River that was enjoyed by the family for many years. As a young girl, Betty attended Camp Arrowhead every summer (she was a Kickapoo!), where she loved synchronized swimming, horseback riding and everything else about camp life. Her love for the Hill Country continued when she and her husband, Clif, bought country places in Utopia and later in Tarpley. She loved watching the seasons change, growing beautiful flowers and feeding the many birds that call the Hill Country home.
Betty followed in the footsteps of her mother, Margaret Deely, as she was involved in many different San Antonio organizations that included: The Junior League of San Antonio, The San Antonio Botanical Center (as a board member), Timely Topics, The Green Hand Garden Club, The Battle of Flowers Association, and the First Presbyterian Church where she served for many years on the sanctuary flower committee. She was also a life-long member of the San Antonio Country Club.
Betty was preceded in death by her father, William C King; her mother and stepfather, Margaret & Tom Deely; her brother, Bill King; and her husband, Clif Anderson. She is survived by her sons, Bryan Anderson, Reverend Whit Anderson and his wife, Heather and two grandchildren, Abbey and Nicholas.
All of us who knew and loved Betty are most thankful for her deep and enduring faith and faithfulness that touched all of us. Of her many great qualities, she was first and foremost a loyal friend to those she loved. We are grateful for the many ways she touched each of our lives and for the enduring legacy her life leaves with us.
