Sue was born in McAllen, TX on October 9, 1946, living in Guam, Germany and Georgia before returning to Texas in 1964 to attend U.T. Austin.
At U.T., she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a doctor of philosophy in sociology. In 1973, she moved to San Antonio to work in the Department of Psychiatry at the U.T. Health Science Center, where she retired as a professor in 2003.
Sue's research, publications, national committee work and professional awards were extensive, as were her volunteer contributions to the community on numerous boards and committees. Aside from her successful career in academics, Sue had a passion for music, literature, and art and also the Spurs.
Growing up in a military family, there were many moves which for Sue always meant many new friends and memorable family trips that led to a lifelong love of travel. Some of her fondest memories were of travels in Mexico and studying Spanish in Cuernavaca, along with her son, Jeff.
She had a particular love of the Mexican culture, especially its art. For the past few years Sue was a docent at the San Antonio Museum of Art where she was able to share her love of art with children.
Sue is survived by her son, Jeffrey L. Hoppe, of San Antonio; mother, Grace M. Keir, of San Antonio; and sister, Barbara Keir and her husband, Bob Conkright, of Austin.
Memorial contributions may be made to the San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W Jones Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78215 or to the charity of your choice.
