Margaret Cape "Margie" Rust, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, died Sunday, May 10, at the age of 67.
She was a servant of the community, known for her strong organizational skills and for her helping hand to many. Through her hard-working devotion to numerous charitable causes, she raised hundreds of thousands of dollars via many galas for the betterment of others.
Fun-loving and the ultimate hostess, she also was a lady of genteel manner, spiritual demeanor, sparkling personality, keen, dry wit and contagious smile. She was never boastful or pretentious of her community involvement and the many awards she received.
Margie had served as president of multiple organizations of varied nature, including the Southwest Foundation Forum, the Cancer Center Council, the San Antonio Symphony League, the Opera Guild of San Antonio, Any Baby Can and the San Antonio Art League, At the time of her death, she was president of the San Antonio Gardenia and Musical Club and the Live Oak Garden Club and was chairing the planning committee for the 50th reunion of the Alamo Heights High School Class of 1959. She also was a graduate of Marjorie Webster College, Washington, D.C., and attended Trinity University.
She was a past president of the San Antonio Women's Celebration and Hall of Fame and a Volunteer Extraordinaire of the Junior League of San Antonio and Bexar County. She had been honored with the Spirit of the American Woman Award by JCPenney Company and as a Headliner of the Association of Women in Communication
For 12 year, Margie wrote "The Column," a social column for The San Antonio Light, and for 13 years "Good Times" for the North San Antonio Times. Her "good times and good friends" signoff became local journalistic legend.
Professionally, Margie had been the executive director of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
She had been a debutante of the San Antonio German Club and was a duchess in the Court of Beauty of the Order of the Alamo. She was a member of the Battle of Flowers Association, the San Antonio Country Club, the Military Civilian Club and Friends of Hospice and past president of Los Festivos. Also, she was a founder of Los Guajalotes Salvajes Supper Club and had just finished the presidency of Los Alegradores Dance Club with her partner of 42 years, her husband Joe.
Margie was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Margie is preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Martindale Cape and John Dewey Cape, and her father-in-law, Vernon A. Rust. She is survived by her husband, Joe Carroll Rust, two sons, Joe Carroll Rust Jr. and his wife Joni and John Cape Rust and his wife Laurie, four grandchildren, Mallie and Megan Rust and Jake Youngblood and Louie May, sister-in-law, Mary Beth Buffington, mother-in-law, Ura Rust, two nephews, Marshall Buffington and his fianc Jenny and Greg Buffington, a niece, Amy Lorenz and her husband Robert, two mischievous red Poodles, Chili and Pepper, and numerous treasured and loving friends, whom she leaves reluctantly.
A memorial service celebrating Margie's life will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Scott Simpson and the Rev. George Sturch as celebrants, followed by a reception at San Antonio Country Club, calling to mind the venue of many of the events planned by Margie.
In loving memory of Margie, friends are asked to give to their favorite charity, as Margie worked to helped many of these organizations.
The family thanks Drs. John Boldt, Kevin Hall, Brad Shipman, Paul Smith Jr. and Nathan Drever and the excellent medical staffs of the University and Northeast Baptist Hospitals and Brighton Gardens, as well as the Rev. Richard Kannwischer, the Rev. Scott Simpson and the Rev. George Sturch and the chaplain service of Northeast Baptist Hospital for their comfort and service.
Urn interment will be in the Martindale-Cape-Rust section of the City Cemetery, San Marcos.
