With heavy hearts we regret to announce the passing of Maria Cordero Hunter, 93, of San Antonio and Corpus Christi, Texas. She peacefully went to be with the Lord on April 9th, surrounded by family and friends. She lived a happy, adventurous life; and will forever be loved and remembered. We will always cherish the life lessons she taught us, and the way she made everyone feel like family.
Maria was born on March 25, 1928, to Maria Duran and Apolonio Cordero in Chihuahua, Mexico. On January 10, 1950, she married George M. Hunter Sr. and was happily married for 31 years until his passing.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband, sister Soledad Hernandez, and brothers, Manuel, Juan, Emiliano, Jose, Blas, and Apolonio Cordero Jr. She is survived by her brother, Angel Cordero; her three children Francisca Carlos, George Hunter Jr., and Mary Hunter Orms; 19 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Those closest to Maria describe her as strong, creative, hard-working, and “the glue that held everyone together.” She worked as a seamstress, waitress, florist, personal assistant, and retail clerk to support her family; and was very interactive in the community, dedicating her spare time to volunteer for the Red Cross, St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Philips Apostle Catholic Church. She loved to garden, crochet, quilt, decorate, and was an avid crafter.
Floral offerings will be welcome, though please consider donating to the South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in honor of Mrs. Maria by calling (361) 852-2100.
Due to restrictions on public gatherings, the Visitation at Trevino Funeral Home – 226 Cupples Road 78237 – will be limited to 50 people in the building at a time. Face coverings will be required to be worn at all times.
