Born on May 10, 1967, in Eagle Pass, TX, to parents Guadalupe Jasso and Leovijildo De Leon, Tonie's journey through life was marked by a deep passion for education and literacy and a commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
She began her academic journey at Eagle Pass High School, graduating in 1985. Tonie attended (Southwest) Texas State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1989 and her Master of Education in 1994. She was a member of the Bilingual Education Student Organization (BESO). Throughout high school and college, Tonie played piccolo and flute in the marching band.
With 30 years of dedicated service, Tonie taught 1st through 5th grade across Texas as both a bilingual and monolingual teacher and made an enduring impact on the North East Independent School District as a Campus Instructional Dyslexia Interventionist, District Literacy ELL Literacy Coach, and ELAR Program Director. Her passion for literacy and reading inspired students and colleagues alike, fostering a love for learning that extended far beyond the classroom.
Upon her well-deserved retirement, Tonie embarked on a new chapter in her life, joining Amplify as a Learning and Development Specialist and later became an Associate Director of Professional Development. Tonie continued her contribution to the field of education and supported building students’ strong foundation in reading and literacy by facilitating professional development, leading sessions, and preparing presenters. She loved her colleagues and was always ready to provide guidance, mentorship, and encouragement.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Tonie found joy and fulfillment in a myriad of hobbies. She was an avid baker, scrapbooker, and card maker, creating timeless treasures that will be cherished by her loved ones. She enjoyed going off the beaten path and finding hidden gems during weekend drives in her 1980 Datsun 280ZX. Tonie collected memories during her many travels that will forever be etched in the hearts of those fortunate enough to share those journeys with her. She enjoyed cheering for her favorite sports teams, including her Bobcats, Spurs, and Fighting Irish, alongside her family and friends. Tonie was a devoted cat lover, finding companionship and solace in the company of her feline friends. Her altruistic spirit shone brightly through her volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, embodying the values of compassion and community service.
Tonie is a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend, and will be dearly missed by all the lives she touched. As we remember and celebrate her remarkable life, let us carry forward the lessons she imparted and continue to spread the light of education, kindness, and generosity in her honor.
Tonie is survived by her husband, Stacey W. Schwab; her daughter, Clarissa Flynn (Juston); her mother, Guadalupe J. De Leon; and her sisters, Carolina De Leon, Teresa De Leon-Cook (Douglas), Maria de la Luz De Leon-Arizpe (Ramon Jr.), Lupita De Leon Salinas, and Hilda De Leon (Gabino Hernandez).
