She was born July 9, 1914, in Woodhaven, New York, to Bernard William Hoffman and Marie Matilda Beyermann Hoffman. Marie's beloved older brother, William Hoffman, preceded her in death.
She completed her secondary education in Floral Park, New York. Marie was an excellent tennis player, captained her high school team and won the Nassau County championship. After graduation, Marie attended business school and thoroughly enjoyed her job in New York City at the Dry Dock Savings Bank.
Marie married Robert George Baumann, Sr. on June 1, 1941 in Floral Park, New York. George Tooker, a life long friend of both Bob and Marie, served as the couple's best man. Bob joined the United States Marine Corps shortly before his marriage to Marie and the newlyweds spent the first two years of their marriage together at the Marine Base in Quantico, Virginia before Bob left for service overseas after the outbreak of World War II. Marie waited for Bob for 33 months while he served as a Marine artillery officer in the South Pacific.
Marie raised their first son, Robert Junior, in her parents' home while Bob was overseas. After the war ended and Bob returned home, a daughter, Betty, and son, Bill, were born. The family settled in the small Long Island village of Oyster Bay, New York where the children grew up with fond memories of the 'barn' of a house at 66 Melbourne Street. The family left the northeast for Houston in 1964 where Bob and Marie enjoyed remodeling an older home under Marie's direction.
Marie was a stay-at-home mom and devoted herself to her children and her husband. She was passionate about her volunteer work at the San Jose Clinic in Houston, Texas spending much time learning Spanish to help the patients in the clinic. She served as a volunteer with the Red Cross for more than 40 years. During World War II, Marie served as a "Grey Lady" at Mitchell Field on Long Island where she helped receive wounded soldiers returning from overseas. She loved to swim and play golf. Marie's mother left New York and lived happily with Marie and Bob in Houston. Her family and friends remember Mitzi as a kind, gentle and loving person who supported her husband and family through both good and difficult times with unflagging optimism. She was always certain that 'things will work out."
Marie is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bob; and by their three children: Robert G. Baumann, Jr. of Reedsport, Oregon, Betty Marie Baumann Welch and her husband Berkshire Welch of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, and William B.F. 'Bill' Baumann and his wife Jan King Baumann, of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Robert G. Baumann III of Eugene, Oregon; Rachel King Baumann, John Edward Baumann, and Sarah Layne Baumann, all of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Regina Hoffman; and niece, Kathy Hoffman, both of San Francisco, California; and her sister-in-law, Nancy Kramer and her husband Ken Kramer of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and their children and spouses, Jeff and Cindy Kramer of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Jen and Joe Gibson, M.D. of Scottsdale, Arizona.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the employees of the Special Care Unit at Town & Country Manor Nursing Home in Boerne, Texas, for their tender care of Mitzi during her final years.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 208 West Bandera Street, Boerne, Texas, at a later date.
