

Dr. Mario V. Hernandez, age 83 of San Antonio, born March 21, 1929 to Vice Admiral Hiram Carrillo Hernandez and Elena Viderique Hernandez in Veracruz, Mexico, was called home into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 27, 2013. Dr. Hernandez, a Cardiac Surgeon, graduated second from his medical school class at the National University of Mexico City School of Medicine in 1954. He was the first Doctor to perform Open Heart Surgery in Veracruz, Mexico in 1962. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1967, he became Board Certified in Internal Medicine practicing until his retirement in 2010 along the way receiving multiple honors during his life time. He loved traveling the world and was an avid fisherman; one time catching a pregnant stingray and then assisting the stingray in giving birth to six live miniature stingrays, afterwards, releasing them and the mother back to the ocean. A doctor to the end! He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is loved and will be dearly missed. Dr. Hernandez is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and a sister. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Hernandez; sons, George and wife, Claudia, Joseph and wife, Carolyn, William and wife, Nancy; grandchildren, William, Jr., Anthony, George Alex, and Joseph Hernandez, Kristen Murray, Banner Matney and Charlynn Aguilar; sister, Marielena Hernandez Mawcinett; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
