
She was born on April 15, 1919 in Wakefield, Massachusetts, one of nine children born to Anne R. Coakley and John D. Shanahan. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic Grade School and graduated from Wakefield High School.
Marion was active in her high school's basketball, bowling and field hockey teams, the senior play committee and the yearbook staff, where she designed the yearbook cover.
After vocational school, she was employed as a secretary at a grain factory during the Depression.
She married Lewis W. Doyle of Everett, Massachusetts, whose Army Career took the couple and their children on travels to Washington DC, Germany, Texas and North Carolina. They settled in San Antonio in 1960, attracted by the schools, military installations and the climate.
Marion was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a member of the Sacred Heart League and the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal.
She belonged to the Fort Sam Houston Officers' Club, the National Auxiliary of the Yankee Division Veterans Association and the Americal Division Veterans Association.
Her special interests included gardening, knitting, reading, music and animals. Marion was a loving wife, a devoted mother, a gracious lady and the truest of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lewis Doyle, sisters, Gladys Jackson, Claire Bessler and Ruth Eileen Shanahan, brothers, Roland and Leonard Shanahan and grandson, Clint Buchholtz.
She is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Ruth Eileen and her husband, Peter Schlette of LA; David and Robin Doyle of WA; Sheila and Fred Buchholtz of Luling; Barry and Kelly Doyle of FL; Mary Jane and Billy Farris of San Antonio; Kathleen and Todd Van Balen of the Woodlands; and Debra and Tom Harty of San Antonio.
She is loved and remembered by 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Other survivors include 3 brothers, John Shanahan and Donald Shanahan of Massachuesetts and Gerald Shanahan of California.
