Marshall Terrell Clegg, age 93, died in San Antonio on Friday, March 28, 2025. He was born on July 29, 1931, in San Antonio. Marshall was the great, great, great grandson of John W. Smith, the Virginia native who did not perish in the Alamo in 1836 because he was dispatched to take the message to Sam Houston and was the last messenger for the besieged garrison. Marshall was also a descendant of Juan Curbelo, one of the sixteen families from the Canary Islands that established the first permanent settlement in San Antonio in 1731.
He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1949 and attended The University of Texas where he was a member of The Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, The Texas Cowboys and was a Cheerleader in 1953 and Head Cheerleader in 1954. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration and a commission in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant.
In May 1954 he married his college sweetheart, the love of his life, Patricia Pennington. They recently celebrated their 70th anniversary. His first job after graduation was serving in the Army at Fort Eustis, Virginia. The military obligation was completed in 1956 and he and Trish returned to San Antonio.
Marshall started working at The Clegg Company, a business started in 1896 by his grandfather L.B. Clegg. The business specialized in Printing, Office Supplies, Office Machines and Office Furniture. When the manager of the Furniture Department died in 1958, Marshall was asked to take over as the manager of that department. For almost twenty years Marshall served as Vice President of The Clegg Company and Manager of the Furniture Division. In 1975, prior to the death of his father, William C. Clegg, Marshall bought the furniture operation from the family and his business became Marshall Clegg Associates Inc.
Marshall Clegg Associates Inc was one of the largest Office Furnishings and Commercial Design firms in the Central Texas area when it was sold to Herman Miller Inc in September 2000.
Over the years, he has been active in numerous business, civic and social organizations: The Rotary Club of San Antonio, The Contract Furnishings Council Co-chairman, Herman Miller Advisory Council. He also served as Order of the Alamo (President 1964), The Texas Cavaliers (King Antonio LXVIII), The Fiesta San Antonio Commission (President 2000), United Way of San Antonio, The Conopus Club, The San Antonio Country Club, and The San Antonio German Club.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia (Trish); daughter, Cathy Lowe and her husband, Jon, his daughter, Karen Mitchell; his two grandchildren, Daniel Clegg Mitchell and his wife, Audrey, and Melissa Anne Mitchell; and his great grandson, Bennett Clegg Mitchell.
