Martha Gardiner Lewis

Martha Gardiner Lewis passed away on Wednesday March 5, 2025 in San Antonio, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born on October 20, 1952 in Houston, TX to Dr. Jesse Lockhart and William Gardiner.

Martha graduated from the University of Houston in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree. At UH she was a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. While in college she worked at St. Luke’s Hospital where she met the love of her life Frank Barry Lewis, who was attending the University of Texas Dental School at UT Health Science Center Houston.

Frank and Martha got married in Houston, TX on July 29, 1978 and settled in San Antonio where Martha studied computer programming at the University of Texas San Antonio. She would go on to work as a software and database engineer for the U.S. Army Medical Command at Fort Sam Houston. During her career she travelled around the world helping install computer systems at US Army hospitals, including numerous trips to the Middle East during Operation Desert Storm.

Martha was preceded in death by her grandfather Lawrence Martin, and grandmother Leota Martin, grandfather Dr. Jesse Lockhart, and grandmother Bernetta Sedwick, father William H Gardiner and mother Dr. Jesse Alice Lockhart, and her husband of 42 years Frank Barry Lewis, Jr. She is survived by her sons Frank Barry Lewis III, and Michael Jacob Rakov, granddaughter Vada Marie Lewis, and grandsons Frank Barry Lewis IV, Elijah James Lewis, and Ethan Gray Lewis.

Martha was blessed for the love and friendship of her caretaker Blanche Gonzalez and her entire family. Blanche and her family provided countless hours of nursing and support during Martha’s final years. The Lewis family wishes to express our deepest gratitude and heartfelt thanks for their tender loving care of Martha.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78212. For those unable to attend, you may watch the livestreaming link located below.

Honorary pallbearers will be her four grandchildren and her caretaker, Blanche Gonzalez.
