

Mary Margaret was born at Ft. Clayton Army Base in the Panama Canal Zone of Panama City, Panama to Abel Candia, I and Margaret Molina on September 13, 1946. She went to school in San Antonio. She married Mike G. Slaughter in California. Many years later she married a second time to the love of her life, Paul B. Luis. She graduated from St. Philips College. She worked as a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (C.O.T.A.) for over 30 years. She was actively involved in all of her loved one’s lives. In college she received honorary student achievement in the Sigma Delta Moo National Spanish Honor Society; she has also received the highest Recognition Award for C.O.T.A. of the Year (twice); lastly Mary has been instrumental in leading thousands of people to Jesus for years. Mary Margaret Candia will be remembered for her loving, selfless, and giving spirit. She never turned anyone away. She could walk into a room of strangers, and leave from a room of friends.
Mary Margaret is preceded in death by her father Abel Candia, I, her mother Margaret Molina, and her loving brother and best friend, Abel B. Candia, II (a Vietnam Veteran).
Mary Margaret is survived by her son Michael C. Slaughter, and daughter Marian Slaughter. Brothers and sisters Evelyn Oliaz, Alan Candia, Teresa Delpieu, Carol Alvarado, Jessica Orozco, and Anastacia De Santos. Grand children Candice Cofresi, Jessica Holt, Destiny Herndon, and Marissa Dalrymple. Great-grandchildren Khloe Corona, Emma Holt, Aria Holt, Isabella Holt, Eliza Dalrymple, and Lyla Holt. Lastly, Debbie Slaughter, her former daughter-in-law, who never stopped being family, and whose love and care brought her comfort in her final days.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, May 15, 2026 at Sunset NW Funeral Home in Leon Valley. Arrangements are by Sunset NW Funeral Home.
