Mary Elena Cobarruvias, 84, was called Home to be with the Lord and her beloved husband, Remigio, and now begins the glory and peace of Everlasting Life, on July 21, 2011. She is survived by her six children and eight grandchildren, who were by her side, took care of her until her last breath. Mary graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1944, went on to Durham business school where her top scores as a stenographer and typist attracted recruiters from the Civil Service Commission, and earned her a job at the VA hospital in Washington DC during WWII. Upon her return, she worked at Kelly Air Force Base, met and married her Coby, in 1947. They both retired from Kelly AFB and they lived as life long San Antonians, raising six children and enjoyed the company of many nieces and nephews. Her proudest legacy were not so much of her college graduate children, but of the commitment of her college degreed grandchildren. Mary was a member of St Brigid Catholic Church and took great pride in her caring neighbors of the Woodridge subdivision. She frequently remarked that she would not sell her home because she would never find such good neighbors. She loved to travel, took extensive trips abroad with her husband during their 57 years of marriage. The most exciting travel of their humble life, was to participate as VIPs at Cape Kennedy, to watch in person, the launch of the engineering marvel her children worked on, the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Mary's surviving siblings are Jesse Ramon, Rebecca Loven, Rudy Ramon and Margarita Ramon Gaston; her surviving children: Linda Lopez, Suzanne Cobarruvias, John Cobarruvias, James Cobarruvias, Joe Cobarruvias and Chris Cobarruvias. Mary insisted that she had no daughters-in-laws, but was blessed with adopted daughters in LaNell Cobarruvias, Evelyn Cobarruvias, Susan Cobarruvias, Valerie Lopez and Mari Lopez. Her pride and joy are her eight grandchildren Gabriel Lopez, Omar Lopez, Taylor Cobarruvias, David Cobarruvias, Vanessa Cobaruvias, Mandy Cobarruvias, Megan Cobarruvias and Andrew Cobarruvias. Mary also leaves two great-grandchildren Eric Lopez and Andrea Lopez plus two great-grandchildren arrivals Joslin and Jacob Lopez and longtime dear friend and confidant, Josue Martinez. Rosary will begin at 7 pm Monday evening, July 25, 2011 at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandara Road, San Antonio, TX 78238. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Tuesday July 26, 2011 at St Brigid Catholic Church, 6907 Kitchener Street, San Antonio, TX 78240, with readings by granddaughters Vanessa, Taylor, Megan and Mandy Cobarruvias with Eucharistic Ministers Evelyn and Susan Cobarruvias. The funeral procession will follow, to reunite Mary with her beloved Coby, at San Fernando Cemetery #2. Serving as pall bearers are son Joe Cobarruvias and his son Andrew, grandsons Gabriel Lopez, Omar Lopez and David Cobarruvias, and family friend Josue Martinez. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to St. Brigid's Catholic Church. The family would like to recognize the superb health care provided by Christus Santa Rosa Hospice, especially Nurses Catherine, Jim, Anne and Max, and Aide Sandra Martinez. The professional care was remarkable and extremely compassionate, as we journeyed through the natural course of life
