Mary was the only daughter in a family of five children. Her father's trade resulted in a number of moves, but ultimately the Hartman family called Doniphan, Missouri home. There, Mary graduated from high school and was crowned first runner up in the Miss Ripley County beauty pageant in 1956. She worked at Vitronic, Inc. after graduation. Local friends introduced her to Charles Kenneth Crawford of Malden, Missouri, who she married on July 18, 1959. With that union, Mary "joined" the United States Air Force, where for the next 32 years she moved 22 times, serving as the "squadron leader," setting up loving homes for her husband and their three daughters. During that time, she worked many Civil Service positions in civilian personnel with the Air Force, Army, and Social Security Administration.
Her family grew with the addition of her sons-in-law and grandchildren. Mary "retired" from the USAF with her husband in 1990, where they had resided in San Antonio at Randolph AFB since 1986. For three years, Mary worked for San Antonio's Northeast ISD before beginning her true vocation of volunteering. She tirelessly cared for others and their needs, nurturing many organizations with her tenacious spirit, loving and kind heart, leadership and dedication. Those selfless efforts included long hours working for the Air Force Officers' Wives Club, the Military-Civilian Wives Club, the Holy Spirit Altar Society, St. Peter and St. Joseph's Children's Home Auxiliary, and the Fiesta Commission. As member, and often the leader of these groups, Mary and her friends were a guiding force for many impactful events.
Mary leaves her husband of 57 years, Charles Kenneth Crawford of San Antonio, Texas; her daughters, Christina Kay Thebeau (Dennis) of Lone Tree Colorado, Katherine Ann Myers of McKinney, Texas, and Candace Lynette Lillibridge (John) of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren, Allison Mobley (Matthew), Michael Thebeau, Lauren Myers, Blake Myers, Heather Lillibridge, Holly Lillibridge, and Scott Lillibridge; her brother, Fred Hartman of Pebble Beach, California; sister-in-law, Jean Hartman of Springfield, Missouri; and brother-in-law, Carson Loafman (Shelia) of Jackson, Missouri. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, a host of long-time friends, and her newly found family at Poet's Walk memory care community. She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers John, Frank and Charles Hartman. May she rest in peace with Jesus as her keeper for eternity.
