Born May 31, 1933, in Nada, Texas, Mary Jo was the daughter of Louis and Marie Hrncir. She grew up in a modest two-bedroom home near St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the third of eight siblings. Her childhood was spent helping with household chores, tending the family garden, and assisting on nearby farms. She attended school in Nada before her family relocated to San Antonio in 1944, where she graduated from Little Flower Catholic School and later completed studies at Draughon's Business College.
At 17, Mary Jo began working for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. On May 31, 1952, she married Richard Victor Di Filippo at Little Flower Catholic Church. Together, they raised five children. Their home was filled with family gatherings, Czech and Italian traditions, and celebrations that reflected her love of heritage.
Mary Jo was deeply involved in parish and community life. She served in the Altar Society at St. Mary Magdalen and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Churches, volunteered at Santa Rosa Hospital, where she became President of the Volunteer Women’s Auxiliary, and contributed as a parish council member, choir member, religious education teacher, and eucharistic minister. She was also active in the KJZT Czech Catholic fraternal society, the Bexar County Czech Heritage Society, the Holy Name Society, and the Nocturnal Adoration Society.
Beyond her volunteer work, Mary Jo enjoyed a long career at The Venice Art Terrazzo Co. Inc. She began part-time when her youngest son started school and eventually became president, working alongside her sons Lawrence and Rick, and grandson Matthew, to continue the family business.
She was known for her tireless work ethic, her devotion to family, and her commitment to service. She nurtured her children with care, celebrated holidays with traditional Czech and Italian dishes, and created a home that was a center of warmth and hospitality.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, who passed away in 2013, and her son, Richard “Rick” Di Filippo, Jr., who passed away in 2023. She is survived by her daughter, Laure A. Rasor (Richard); her daughter-in-law, Deborah Di Filippo; and her sons, John L. Di Filippo (Patricia), Lawrence H. Di Filippo (Sandra), and William J. Di Filippo. She is also survived by her grandchildren—Stephanie Rasor, John D. Di Filippo, Aaron Di Filippo, Matthew Di Filippo, Cathrin Di Filippo, Sarah Rasor, Nick Rasor, Rebecca Brinkmann, Andrew Di Filippo, and Mary Shannon Di Filippo—and her 21 great-grandchildren.
The family is profoundly grateful to the devoted caregivers from Avionn Healthcare—Sonia, Tracy, and Pauline—whose kindness and gentle care gave Mary Jo comfort and enriched her days with friendship and joy.
