Mary O’Brien was born on July 10, 1956, in Enid, Oklahoma, the fifth of eight children of Ruby and Valentine A. O’Brien Sr. She passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at approximately 5:45 p.m., from natural causes at the age of 69.
Mary lived most of her life with her parents in San Antonio, Texas. For the past three years she resided at Cedar Point Health & Wellness Center in Cedar Park, Texas.
At the age of three, Mary suffered a severe brain injury after being struck by a car on February 1, 1960. Through all of her years, she maintained her love of drawing, painting and a wonderful sense of humor. She loved painting ceramics and took great joy in gifting her creations to family and friends.
Mary also competed in the Special Olympics, earning many medals over the years. She worked hard for every bit of progress- a new step, a new reach, a new word- showing great strength and perseverance throughout her life.
Mary was deeply loved by her family and by everyone who truly knew her. She loved music and conversation and often surprised others with her quick wit and playful sarcasm. Mary never complained and brought warmth to everyone around her.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Valentine A. O’Brien Sr. and Ruby O’Brien, and her sister, Teresa Lynn. She will be laid to rest alongside her parents at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
She is survived by her siblings: Patty Miller, Susan Foster, Katy Hempel, Skip O’Brien, John (OBIE) O’Brien, and Larry O’Brien; and by her nieces and nephews: Paige Miller, Ryan Miller, Joey Barnes, Shari Wall, Brian Hempel, Hollie Hempel, Corey O’Brien, Scott O’Brien, Ruby O’Brien, and Maude O’Brien.
Mary, you were the heart of our family. We will always miss you.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at Sunset Memorial Park & Funeral Home located at 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Chapel Gathering will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for anyone who would like to speak.
Committal Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery Pavilion located at1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209. (Please note there will be no escort to the cemetery).
