So, five years. It seems so long ago but also like yesterday that you picked me up from my first year of college. I was so looking forward to the summer we would have together. I'm 24 now, and life has changed a lot, but not a day goes by that I don't think about you. I'm moving home soon to be with Mom and Chris and hopefully our family can continue to be strong without you and Daddy. We feel your absence every day, and have for the past five years. When I was 19 I never thought this day would come, it seemed impossible to see that far in advance. But now that it's here I feel like it came too soon. I miss you.

Sometimes the rain is sudden, like an angel sounding a trumpant. Other times is lingers, captured inside a trance, forming endless prismatic melody. i would trade everything i own, every single ounce of happiness that i have left in me, every good thing thats ever happened to me to just hear his laugh one more time.

On the night of 9-11 I was a passenger in a car accident. I was sitting in the fron seat of the car, and my door was the door of impact. My window shattered and the door is collapsed in. I walked away with a bruise on my elbow and a little stiffness, and everyone in the car is fine. When i got out of the car i was not sure how i was not hurt, until the rain stopped and I knew that Matt was watching out for me. Thank you matt for being my gardian angel. I love you!

I miss you Matt. I started college and i am having so much fun, I wish you were here for me to tell you all my stories. Things willl never be the same in life, but i know that you are in a better place. Look out for me and our family I know that you will. We first met when you were three months old. And had our picture taken outside the Alamo. We met each summer when you came to the beach. You were such a happy little guy. I watched you play basketball in Texas. I helped you with your homework. Even though you always left English to the last. I went to your Thanksgiving Championship football game. I introduced you to your Smith Family relatives at our summer reunion. I have always loved you.You were so easy to be with. I will remember and miss you all the rest of my days. It has been a little over two months since I received the news that will haunt me forever. It is amazing how easily the time goes by but how heavily the pain remains. I thought by now some of this horrible sadness might diminish but it stands its ground, stubborn as ever. I cannot even describe how much I miss my brother. Every time I find an item of his or a reminder of something we did together, fresh tears spring to my eyes immediately, and it seems to me amazing that I have any left. I try to continue, to live one day at a time, to keep myself busy and my mind on other things but the sadness does not leave me. I try to find comfort in memories but that only brings the realization that there will be no more opportunities to make new ones and I find myself face to face with reality and the awful, unbearable truth once more. 
Soon I will be going back to school. The time has come for me to "get on with my life" and for things to "go back to normal." But things will never go back to normal. Normal would mean that Matt would still be here with me to laugh and joke around. Normal would mean that no one would ever have had to experience this horrendous suffering. Normal would mean that I could drive down my own street without looking to the side and seeing the site where my brother left this world forever. I cannot get on with my life because my life included Matt. He is forever embedded in my heart and in my mind, and I will try my hardest to persevere and live the rest of my life as "normally" as I possibly can. I will love my brother always.

I spoke with Matt often on the phone, met him once or twice, and he was such a personable, likeable kid that was growing into such a personable, likeable adult. My deep condolences and prayers are with the family and all the people fortunate enough to know Matt. He was a great friend throughout high school. I went to my first concert with him, where I tried to pull him out of a crowd after falling down, but he was alright and having too much fun anyway. That's how he always seemed to me. I remember sitting with him during lunch, where he was always laughing, joking and making people around him smile. He was very good at that, but everyone knows these things about him already. It's nice to remember though, and it's good to know he's watching out for us now. I'll miss him.

 The sorrow and deep sense of loss we all feel as a result of Matt's untimely departure makes words hard to find. All of us seek reasons and answers from our higher powers but our mourning keeps our vision clouded. 
 We can all take comfort in the fact that the "secret" we all know to be Matt was no secret at all! The outpouring of love and affection for Matt that we witnessed at his memorial and final resting has enlightened us that Matt touched every person he came in contact with. We are all better because of Matt. 
 Without answers I will forever believe Matt had a higher calling. He was chosen to be the guardian angel for our family. He will forever be watching over you, his brother and sister, his cousins, aunts and uncles and his entire family. 
 We will no longer pray for Matt. We will pray to Matt. He will be our inspiration and provide all of us with guidance as we face our remaining life challenges. He will be our source of strength.

We have lost a very fine and fun-loving young man. I enjoyed having Matt in my math and social studies classes. He kept the class interesting and alive. We are never ready to lose a loved one, but losing one at such a young age is especially difficult. Just know that Matt is in a far better place at a task God had for him. Dear Lynn, Dan, Diana, and Chris, I was very saddened to hear of Matt's death. Whenever one so young dies it causes us to question why these things have to happen. Know that Matt is now resting in the best place of all. God needed him in heaven. I know that his death will not be in vain, but will provide a lesson for us all. Hold on to the good times that you had with Matt and I know that there were many. He was such a joy to be around, always smiling and cracking the jokes. When I first went to Mt. Sacred Heart, I was doing my morning duty in front of the gym one day when you stopped to drop off Diana and Matt. He was in the third grade. I seemed like it was always an ordeal to get them out of the car! Matt's shoes were untied and so I told him to tie them before he tripped on the laces. He knelt down, and very carefully tucked the shoe laces into his shoes, smiled implishly at me and walk back to the blacktop. I just shook my head and knew that this was going to be challenge. I watched that group for two more years before I got a crack at them. They were a challenge! But, by the end of the year, I went to Mrs. Herrera and asked to be moved to 6th. grade so that I could have them again. They really were my favorite class. They taught me a lot and I hope that I taught them something too. I will always remember Matt with fond memories and I wll miss him. May God's peace and healing be with you as you face the difficult times ahead. You will be in my prayers

I only knew Matt in the testosterone filled halls and fields of Central Catholic Highwhere he fit in perfectlyCentral is a difficult place to let slip emotional statements like this, but I have thought this since the day I met Matt Selwyn. 
 Matt is a beautiful wholesome loving spirit who could not find it in his heart to be unkind to anyone. He is a witness to the charity that unites us all or could unite us all if we were all as pure hearted as Matt. 
 I realize that his acquaintance has subtly shaped the way I understand generosity and love; I also realize that he is probably making fun of me right now for becomeing so emotional. Finally I realize that these are the reasons I love Matt so much, and doubtlessly, the reasons we all do. 
 I lament for this loss, I lament for the loss to the community as a whole. I lament that the first reunion of sorts for Central Catholic and Mt. Sacred Heart allumns should come so sadly. I lament for Matt's dear friends and dear family. I lament that such a wonderful soul has gone on to meet the Lord. I can only rejoice that the love Matt Selwyn brought to the world can never be stripped away. I love you, Matt. Look out for all of us up there.
