

Maybelle Stanfield Montgomery, age 110, died September 22, 2006, at her home in San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Montgomery was born December 4, 1895, at Oak Island, Texas, where her paternal grandfather had come from Springfield, Tennessee in 1856. At age ten, she with her family moved to San Antonio where the children could attend the San Antonio schools.
Mrs. Montgomery was a graduate of San Antonio Female College, the University of Texas at Austin, and she received a Master's Degree in Education from Teacher's College of Columbia University, New York City, in 1921. She was a member of Laurel Heights United Methodist Church.
She and her husband Dee operated the Montgomery Drug Store in Olmos Park for many years. Prior to that, she taught English at Brackenridge High School. A lifelong admirer of fine literature and poetry, she was a strong believer in the value of higher education.
Survivors include her son, William Gray Montgomery, granddaughter Ann Montgomery Leafstedt and husband Carl Leafstedt, and their children Wendell and Kent, and granddaughter Mary Montgomery Walsh and husband Tim Walsh, of New York City, and their children William and Elizabeth. Mrs. Montgomery is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Mattie Fancher, of Austin. Mrs. Montgomery was predeceased by her husband Dee Montgomery, daughter-in-law Mary Faye Hicks Montgomery, sisters Ann Kizer and Lucille Carson, and brothers Alton Stanfield and Oscar Stanfield.
