Melissa Morgan Georgoulakis passed away on February 12, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, after a brief, unexpected illness. Melissa was born in Buffalo, New York, on February 16, 1962, to Ronald Leander Smith and Sandra Jean Smith.
Melissa’s early years were spent in New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maine, and Austin, Texas, before settling down in San Antonio, Texas for her long-term home. She graduated from William B. Travis High School in Austin and then attended a vocational school in the discipline of medical assistant (MA). She served as an MA for several years in Austin-area medical offices. Subsequently, in San Antonio, she was involved in the insurance business and as a banking loan officer. She was in the final stages of establishing her own online pet apparel business, CritterUSA, when she passed.
Melissa was preceded in death by her parents, Ron and Sandra, her beloved husband James M. Georgoulakis, and aunt Nancy Savage. She leaves behind son Shane Morgan Poston, step-son Steven Georgoulakis and wife Stephanie and sons Alex and Chase; step-daughter Beth and daughter Karli, step-father Forrest Frank Hopkins; brother Adam Paul Smith and wife Addi and sons Austin and Aaron; sister Margot Gorske and husband Scott and son Benjamin Wilton and daughter Alyson; sister Magdalena Cohen and son Seth and daughters Erin Smith-Wisnewski and Alora Cohen; Aunt Victoria Anne Smith; and cousin Brenna Savage.
Melissa was a vibrant, energetic, intelligent, and caring woman, wife, mother, step-mother, aunt, niece, and friend to many. Foremost among her many passions were her enduring love and support for her son Shane. Her connection with children went well beyond her own family. Her optimism and positivity were extended to everyone she encountered. She was a beacon in keeping all aware of the next holiday coming up, the decorations and costumes that would be needed, and the presents that were needed to properly mark birthdays and other occasions. She was an excellent cook and loved little more than setting out a sumptuous meal for family and friends. She treasured animals of all types, including a constant stream at home of dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and snakes. Recently she and Shane had spent many happy hours volunteering at the San Antonio Animal Defense League. Her gardening instincts were on full display wherever she lived. She relied on a strong religious faith in good times and bad.
