It is with profound sadness and much love that we grieve the passing of Michael Scott Cain, 74, beloved husband, father, and friend. On April 17th, surrounded by family, Mike went home to be at peace with the Lord.
Mike was born in Greenville, Texas, on November 10, 1951, to his parents, Mary Blanche Roach Cain (born November 8, 1922; died October 29, 1986) and Jack Winston Cain (born October 17, 1924; died September 4, 1984). He grew up with his two older sisters, Madge and Joanna, and his younger brother, Mark.
Mike graduated from Churchill High School and married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Ann Hillegass. They were joined in holy matrimony on December 23, 1971, beginning their 55-year union. Together they had two daughters: Erin Nicole Cain and Cynthia Lynn Cain. Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Ann Hillegass Cain; his daughters, Erin Nicole Cain Russell and her husband, Luke Russell, and Cynthia Lynn Cain; his grandchildren, Isabella Noel Cain, Autumn Rose Scheel, and Alden Drake Russell; and his siblings; Madge and Russ Mack, Joanna and Jack Peterson, and Mark and Linda Cain, as well as his many nieces and nephews.
Mike graduated from UTSA with a Bachelor of Business Administration on August 19, 1977, after working during the day to pay for his education and taking classes at night. He was always a very hard, diligent worker in whatever he endeavored to do, and he was deeply respected and highly thought of by all who met him.
He began his banking career in the basement of Frost Bank, working in the records department before advancing to Commercial Lending, leading to a long, successful, and influential career. Mike retired as a Senior Executive Vice President after 46 years of “integrity, caring, and excellence.”
Even with such accolades and a successful career, Mike’s most important role was as a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather (“Gramps”). Mike was an avid learner and had a passion for music, nature, and woodworking. He enjoyed singing with the Chordsmen and later with The Heart of Texas, both competitive barbershop groups. He was the lead in a quartet, Studio One, and loved performing with his friends.
Mike was self-taught and excelled at nearly everything he set out to do—except for plumbing! He was a self-taught master woodworker who loved crafting beautiful furniture, bowls, boxes, pens, pencils, musical instruments, and even a telescope. Mike loved to create and was always striving for perfection. He had many interests/hobbies and would learn as much as he could about each one, including woodworking, music, fishing, golfing, grilling and photography. He loved to share his interests with others and teach them what he knew.
Mike was a generous and humble man. He was intelligent, kind, and had a great sense of humor with a sharp wit! He was a lifelong protector and provider for his family. There is no way to adequately express what a wonderful man he was and the legacy he leaves behind.
May the memories we have, and share bring us comfort as we continue our time here without him. Even though he will be greatly missed, we celebrate his life and his rebirth with our Lord in Heaven.
A Celebration of Mike’s life will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church, 16801 Huebner Road, San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, May 1st at 11:00 a.m. For live streaming of the service you can go to www.Concordia.cc and watch online. Streaming will begin about 15 minutes before the service starts. Please wear happy colors or green, Mike’s favorite color, as we honor and celebrate him.
