Michael Lynn Janssen (Mike, Mikey, Grandpa, Paw-Paw) passed away peacefully, surrounded and consoled by family, on May 20, 2022 in San Antonio, TX at the age of 70. He was born September 1, 1951 in Cuero, TX to the late Carroll James Janssen & Olivia Marie Riedesel Janssen.
He was a graduate of Yorktown High School Class of 1969 and the University of Texas Class of 1973, where he received a degree in Accounting.
He began his career as a CPA in public accounting, and later, was an executive for LifeRe Insurance Company and Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. where he retired in 2014 at the age of 63. Upon retirement, you could find him at the family cabin in Breckenridge, CO where he enjoyed getting a break from the south Texas heat. Mike was a devout Christian and had an affinity for his weekly bible study courses. He was on the planning and zoning committee for the City of Shavano Park for the last 15 years, and in his free time enjoyed hunting, hiking, coin collecting, old war/western movies, and lots of Perry Mason reruns!
We will miss Mike praying over the family meals, and his children will never forget his most quoted bible verse to them, "Bad company corrupts good character." He will always be remembered for his kindness and the way he treated loved ones and strangers alike. One of the familys fondest memories is how he would make it a point to know waiters/waitresses by their first name so he could speak to them like a friend, even if it drove his kids crazy.
Mike married Barbara Sparkman Janssen in 1990 in San Antonio, TX. They were happily married for 32 years.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Carroll and Olivia Janssen.
Mike is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughter Michele Janssen Milo and husband Mark, son Michael Janssen, Jr. and wife Sarah, son Forrest Janssen and wife Summer, and daughter Kristen Janssen; four grandchildren, Alyssa Milo, Elliette Janssen, Hank Janssen, and Parker Janssen; his brothers James Janssen and wife Sheryl, David Janssen and wife Sherri, and Don Janssen and wife Debbie; and many other relatives and friends.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am Friday, May 27 at Immaculate Conception Chapel, 285 Oblate, San Antonio, TX, with a reception to follow in the Grotto Hall.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the entire staff at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital for all their help and support throughout this journey.
Memorial donations may be made to Bible Study Fellowship, 19001 Huebner Road, San Antonio, TX 78258 or the charity of your choice.
