She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 13th, 1910 to Charles and Anna Ritter. Mildred graduated from the University of Illinois with a Degree in Education and later earned a Masters Degree from the University of Hawaii. She taught mathematics and business in the Chicago public schools and for many years at Hammond Technical Vocational High School, Indiana. She enjoyed counseling students and escorting trips to Washington D.C. and New York City. Mildred loved teaching and often said that she "had never worked a day in her life".
In 1975 Mildred retired to San Antonio with her sister Florence who she took care of for 9 years after she had a stroke in 1986. She was a keen traveler, and visited all 50 States and many countries around the world several times. Her last trip abroad was as recent as June 2011 to visit her grand-nephew David and his family in Scotland. She also had a home in Anna Maria Island, Florida, where she enjoyed spending time by the water. Mildred was also known for her love of Cadillacs, which she drove for over 50 years.
Mildred wished to be remembered as an Educator and World Traveler, but those who knew her will remember her most for her warmth, generosity and her enjoyment of life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her sisters Harriet, Florence, Genevieve and Marie, and her brother Elbert.
She is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her cousin Annabel Anderson, a life-long friend, her grand-nephew David Mirmelli, who she raised from the age of 7, her nieces and nephews Maria Haupt-O'Donnell, Janice Christensen, Bob Robinson, Roger Swart, Sherrill Riemersma, Patricia "Willie" Offerman, grand-nephew Dale Christensen, and many other close friends and family.
