Minifred’s life was surrounded by music from the time that she could walk. Her Papa taught her to play trumpet and called her his little virtuoso. She became so proficient that she played in the high school band from the time she was in third grade.
Minifred graduated from Floresville High School in 1946. She attended Our Lady of the Lake University and Trinity University before graduating from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1950 with a Bachelors Degree in Music Education.
During her long music career, Minifred taught band at Alvin Junior High School, Pettus ISD, Kingsville ISD and numerous Catholic Schools in San Antonio. She taught kindergarten music at St. David’s Episcopal School in San Antonio for over thirty years. She made many life-long friends there and her dedication to music education touched the lives of countless children. Minifred followed in her father’s footsteps, leading the Teltschik Family Band as they played for family reunions, Wurstfest, The Texas Folklife Festival and the Floresville Peanut Festival. She sang in the Northwood Presbyterian Church choir and taught children’s choir.
Minifred shared her passion for rhythm, dance, and music with her children and grandchildren, strongly encouraging that each one play a musical instrument in the band. She often gave them private lessons and supervised their practice. She accompanied them on the piano as they competed in UIL solo contests. To them, she could do anything and everything. She used the talents that God gave her to the fullest, passing her enthusiasm on through generations.
Music, faith, and family were central to Minifred’s life. She devoted great energy to every school program and performance in her career and every family band performance or reunion celebration. Beyond her passion for music, Minifred loved gardening, her ranch in the Texas Hill Country, and family time at the coast.
A long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, she loved her Bible Study friends and appreciated their devoted support.
Minifred was a member of the Northwest San Antonio Cosmopals for over fifty years where she made long-lasting friendships.
Benny and Minifred suffered the tragic loss of their daughter Carol who passed away at the young age of 39. They took on the role of loving parents for Carol’s daughter, Ceceilia.
Minifred was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She took great joy in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She never rested until she felt certain all her chicks were safely in their nest. The love that Benny and Minifred shared was always evident to those around them. This love was internalized by her children and grandchildren and provided a guide for each of our lives and relationships.
Mother, we will always be under your loving wings and find comfort that you are with our angel, Carol.
“Sometimes I forget, Lord, that my life is a song and that you are the composer. Sometimes I forget that I am your instrument and that you are the musician.”
The family will hold a private memorial with hopes of a grand celebration of life in the future when we can all gather again safely.
