Monica and I were close childhood friends. I spent quite a bit of time with her and her family, traveling with them for summer vacations in Mexico. Monica was as everyone describes her here - truly a loving, giving person. She had a way of making people feel worthwhile but was, herself, as self depreciating as they come. Today, out of no where she came to my mind and I wondered how her life had turned out. When I googled her name and found out she had passes 10 years ago, it just seemed so unreal. I am sorry I was not there for her family in their time of grief and I am sorry I didn't get a chance to pay my respects and say goodbye. More than anything, I am sorry we lost touch and I wasn't there for her when she needed someone to help her see how worthwhile her existence was to so many people. I will remember her fondly and hope that she does finally know how loved she was and that so many people miss her. Via con Dios, my friend.

I just learned a month ago that Monica finished her life - 6 months after it happened. If I lost my eyes and ears, the walls would disappear; yet when I look inside my soul, I see no distance between friends. Monica, we shared a friendship and as we once discussed, we agreed the news that one of us passing before the other would spawn grief and sadness...and it is I who feels the pain in my heart over your passing. It was great to have you in my life and I regret we lost touch. I will require serenity to accept what I can not change about this and hope to get it by pouring love for you, so our creator judges all of us with mercy. I still recall the scene of the last time I saw and spoke to you...I never knew it would actually be the last time...I always remembered it as one of our best times together.

I am sad, The sun may be shining, but my world has gone black The sky may be blue, but my eyes sting from crying. The clouds may be fluffy, but my feet drag and kick at rubble. The grass may be green, but my hands sift the dirt as ash. I am sad, I miss my cousin and I would like to comfort my Uncle Arturo and family..! but I know the best I can do is pray and ask God to take care of my Monica.

We met Monica twice, both times very briefly, but were very impressed by her outgoing personality poise and intelligence. She was a lovely person we would have liked to know better. A Story of Dogs and Apologies read aloud at the end of Monica?s funeral My friend, Ellen and I first met Monica at the Grotto at night when, as usual, she was being selfless, walking a dog that wasn?t even hers. So I really have Iris the chocolate lab to thank for introducing us. The first thing Monica ever said to me was, ?I?m sorry!? She was sorry that because of her and Iris, our dogs were barking! My friend diagnosed Monica as having ?acute apologitis? and Monica laughed like a waterfall when we told her. The apologies never stopped, neither did the laughter. When we went to visit Arturro, Monica?s father, she was sorry that the couch wasn?t whiter. We told her we were disgusted and couldn?t stay. After a while with Arturro, it wasn?t hard to see where Monica got her charm. It?s true to say that she could have charmed the socks off of an elephant. When you meet someone like Monica, you wish there could be more people like her. She as so easy to love, so easy to talk to and kind to everyone she met. She knew no strangers. I never saw her when she wasn?t smiling and never heard of a time when she wasn?t willing to help someone else. For example, when a new dog ate my friend Carolyn?s quilt, Monica dashed out and bought her a brand new one. Monica had never even met Carolyn. When I needed a home, she called a friend and found me one. Then she cleaned my old place and moved me into the new one. And when I had to put my old dog to sleep one morning, Monica met me back at the Grotto where we had first met. Then she made me breakfast at her house and comforted me. I lay on her living room floor and sobbed. The day before she died, I E mailed Monica, having not seen her for three weeks. I wrote, ?How am I coping without you?? She wrote right back, ?I shall adore you from afar. Love you muchly, Monicita? She made me and everyone else feel like we were the only person in the world, her favourite person. It was a special gift she had, as well as having an enviable forgiving heart. Monica was to be one of four bridesmaids in my upcoming wedding. The only thing I worried about was?would anyone notice me? When Monica met AD and they worked together on fixing up the B & B, she was so proud and happy. My fiancnd I stayed there overnight, but we didn?t get any sleep, because Monica was in and out of the room all morning, apologizing. And then she called to apologize for apologizing. If Monica were here, she?d be sorry that she made us cry. All the people who loved her your name here Monica, I am such a better person for having known you and for that, you never have to be sorry again.

It's not easy for me to find the proper words to write about Monica. The last few days have been a very difficult time for all of us who knew and cared about her. I'm not a religious man, but it's my sincerest hope that she's in a place where she can see the way everyone has reacted to what's happened. She was loved by more people than she was probably ever aware of. Monica was, without hesitation, one of the most kind-hearted individuals I've ever known. It was not part of her character to talk disparagingly about anyone with whom she came into contact. She was the kind of person who absolutely, first and foremost, saw the good in everyone, and I can't honestly say that about anyone else I've ever known. In that respect, she was unique - people often throw the phrase around, but I couldn't be more sincere than when I say that there wasn't a bad bone in Monica's body. As the days have passed, the pain has lessened, simply because thinking of Monica conjures up nothing but great thoughts in my mind. She was positive, cheerful and she brightened the lives of those who knew her. Her smile was infectious and being around her was always a "she made my day" kind of experience. I miss her terribly already, and I want her to know how much I loved her and how much she meant to all of us. I am simply grateful to have known her for the time that I did.

Monica was a complicated person with many hidden compartments. But she always made one thing clear: She was my friend. She loved me and I loved her. She never made me feel any limits or any fear of judgment. If it were 3 a.m. and I was in a dark place emotionally, I knew I could call her and she would listen. She never failed to put me at ease. No matter how irrational my state of mind was, she had a way of calming, making me feel better about myself and my situation. When the sun was shining and I would check my answering machine, I'd immediately smile upon hearing her voice. "Jeanne, it's such a glorious day outside," Monica would say in such a happy way. "I'm taking a walk. Would you like to join me?" One time, I was horribly sick with a stomach virus; she went to an all-night drugstore and brought me my needed medicine at 5 a.m. No questions, no grumbles. She was a uniquely giving and gentle person, so much so, that I had to guard against taking advantage of her generosity. I wanted to make sure she knew she was just as loved and appreciated. Monica also showed much affection for my young son, Jake -- took him to movies, gave him foreign coins, became his grown-up pal. I feel a great, great loss now and the world is less bright without her smile, without her style, without her beauty, without the warmth of her hand. I only wish I could have effectively eased her pain in the same way she always managed to ease mine. Her dad, mom, brother and her long-time friend, Terry, as well as all those other people whom she touched so memorably must feel too much sorrow to comtemplate at this time. My heart goes out to them. Thank you, Monica, for giving me the privilege of getting to know you so well. -- Jeanne

i first met monica when i moved here from california in 1969-70, i remember going to her house and playing on the jungle gym that her father build we used to have lots of fun, but as the years went by we lost track of each other, I was shocked to learn of her death, My condolences to the family.

I was very saddened to hear about Monica's sudden death yesterday. I knew her from way, way back, since the mid-70's. But unfortunately I have not seen Monica in a long time. 
My condolences and blessings go out to her family. I really wish I could have seen her as she looks in the photo...a very beautiful and grown up lady. She was always sweet and innocent to me as a teenager trying to find our way. Tears of sadness flowed down my cheeks as I looked upon her face for the first time in over 20 years. She truly was a classic-looking woman. And my memories of her, along with my older brothers who had lived in the same old neighborhood back then, all have nothing but fond memories of her. May she rest in peace. Goodbye, Monica. I hope to see you in the afterlife...

I became Monica's personal trainer and massage therapist last summer. It is hard to say who benefited more from these sessions. I am terribly saddened by her loss and the realization of the turmoil that brought her to the decision to take her own life. All those who met her at my place of work will miss her greatly.
