The Lord, in His infinite mercy and grace, called his faithful servant to the heavenly home He had prepared for her. Saying, "Well done, my good and faithful servant, sit here at my right hand. The fight is over!" Oh! What a glorious day! You have finished the course; you have kept the faith!"
Cherry was the fifth child born to Roxie E. and Dillard A. Childers, in Saint Louis, Missouri. Cherry was the last of her six siblings to go home. God is merciful.
Cherry gave her life to Christ at the age of 12. The Pastor asked her mother to let Cherry be the Pastor's soloist at the age of 5. He said, "Cherry was so sincere at that age. And he knew God was using her in his service. She was not afraid of the five thousand members in the audience." She would throw her little head up, close her eyes, and sing to Jesus." So, her mother gave the okay and Cherry remained the Pastor's soloist until she came to San Antonio to marry Nathaniel, her precious husband of 42 years.
Cherry was ill most of her young life, but she never stopped learning. She played piano, organ, and keyboard for services, weddings, funerals, charities, and different organizations. She sang solos, gave recitals, sang in the city-wide choirs and churches – all for free! She always said, God did not want her to take fees or pay! So, she never did. Cherry taught Sunday school for many years. She never forgot to praise God and thank God for keeping her alive after 11 years of illness – in and out of the hospital. God took her off the death bed twice. Cherry married Nathaniel, taught Algebra and Trigonometry at Highland High School, and Calculus at St. Mary's University. She was a willing volunteer for the IRS, charities and religious ministries, 30 nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and hospitals. Cherry wrote over 78 beautiful spirit-lifting songs, she said God gave them to her so she gave them to others.
Preceded in death by his brothers, Iris, Frank, Bobbie "Dutch" Childers; and sisters, Mamie and Beatrice "Doll" Childers.
She is survived by her niece, Sheila "Candy" Reed Miller; nephews, Ronnie and Alex Childers; Also leaves behind a host of cousins, other family members and friends.
Cherry's favorite prayer – "Lord, let my life be a reflection of You dwelling within me." I want to help, not hinder!"
