Nata Jane Halty Brown Kolton was born in Castroville, Texas on November 20, 1925. The only child of Henry and Mary Halty, she had a happy childhood growing up on a farm in Rio Medina. She was a talented piano player, sometimes playing in the local church, and she was an excellent student, graduating first in her class. After taking classes at Our Lady of the Lake University and working as a secretary at Fort Sam Houston for a time, Nata married Thomas “Tom” Brown and they had two children, Vicki and Jeff. Nata then worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Mathematics department of UTSA, specializing in transcribing complicated mathematical papers. Tom passed away, and some years later Nata found love again with Richard Kolton, to whom she remained married until his death in 1994. Nata loved to travel, and after retirement she had many adventures, including a meaningful trip to Italy. She loved to go see shows in Las Vegas with her group of friends from Castroville and to go on road trips with her family. She was easily recognizable wherever she went because of her lovely red hair and twinkling green eyes, and she remained spirited and independent into her 90s. She was devoted to her family, and they were devoted to her. She passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by loved ones, on March 24, 2021. She is survived by her two children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She will be missed.
