

Neil John Bernard Bowie, born in 1926 to Neil Bowie of Glasgow and South Uist, Scotland and Isabella Lawson Bowie, ne McMurray, of Glasgow, Scotland and Vancouver, Canada, died on March 8, 2020 in San Antonio. After graduating from the University of Glasgow School of Medicine in 1950, he spent two years in Kenya in the Royal Army Medical Core. On returning to Scotland, he joined a doctors surgery in Glasgow, working as a GP. In 1959, he married E. M. Phyllis "Phyl" McGuinness. They immigrated to Texas in 1964, where he qualified as a Radiation Oncologist and she earned a PhD in Anatomy. Neil believed that no one should be denied healthcare because of a lack of means and volunteered monthly to provide after-hour, free womens cancer screenings at Daughters of Charity in South San Antonio. He retired in 1991. Outside of work, he enjoyed many hobbies including ranching, fishing, dog training, cooking, and coaching the Alamo City Rugby Club. The city named the clubs field in his honor in 1986. He was an avid reader; a student of history; and lifelong devoted Catholic. He is survived by his wife of 60 years; their four children: Sen, Neil, Mhairi, and Liz; their eight grandchildren: Neil, Roderic, Iain, Aidan, Malcolm, Liam, Calum, and Isla; and the last pair in a long line of dogs, Kate and Tess.
