Nelle Lee Nye Weincek, age 88, died Sunday, January 21, 2001. Mrs. Weincek was born on April 6, 1912 in Chicago, IL. As a young woman, Nelle and her husband moved to San Antonio where they made their home for more than 50 years. A major part of Mrs. Weincek's life was spent in dedicated service to the San Antonio Conservation Society. She joined the Society in 1955 and became an active member the next year. From 1963 until 1975, she served on the Executive Committee in a wide variety of positions. In addition, she worked as chairman, vice chairman, or a member of virtually every committee in the Society. Elected as director in 1960, she served on the Board of Directors continuously up until 1987, when she chose to become a full-time volunteer in the library and a working member of other committee such as Awards, Heritage Education Seminar, Historical Markers, Scholarship, etc. It was the Society's Library and Archives where she focused her efforts, devoting between two and four days every week as a library volunteer. She served as Library Archives chairman several times and as the Society's only photo archivist, caring especially for its extensive architectural history photograph and slide collection. Answering many of the requests addressed to the library, she was known as "a walking encyclopedia of the Society's history, traditions and procedures." In addition, she was an active volunteer with A Night in Old San Antonio since the early sixties, serving as finance chairman, vice chairman and chairman of NIOSA. For over thirty years, she served as co-chairman of the Hitching Post. In 1998, in appreciation for her unselfish devotion and meritorious service to the Conservation Society for over forty years, she was designated an honorary member. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester S. Weincek, and her brother, Lee D. Nye of Athens, GA. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy E. Nye of Athens, GA; a brother-in-law, Earl Weincek of Naperville, IL; a sister-in-law, Ms. Terry Weincek of Naperville, IL; a brother-in-law, Floyd Weincek of Edgewater, MD; numerous nieces and nephews and her dear friends Mrs. Jack Watson and Mrs. Roland T.
