Patrick Joseph Pape, 85, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2025, in San Antonio.
Born in Miami, Florida, to Eugene C. Pape and Marguerite Clark Pape, Patrick moved with his family to San Antonio, where he attended Central Catholic High School. He later earned his law degree from St. Mary’s University and went on to practice law for 59 years.
In 1955, at the Alamo Heights Pool, Patrick first met Martha Ettalee Edwards—the love of his life. They married on August 14, 1964, in San Antonio and shared 61 wonderful years together. Martha’s devotion and care were a constant inspiration, and Patrick always held her at the very center of his heart.
Patrick’s distinguished legal career reflected both dedication and leadership. He served as President of the San Antonio Bar Association in 1977 and specialized in real estate and banking law. For over three decades, he handled significant commercial loan work for Frost Bank, serving on the Board of Directors of Citizens Frost Bank and later the Advisory Board of Cullen Frost Bankers. He cherished the lifelong professional and personal relationships he built through his work.
Proud of his heritage, Patrick was a fifth-generation descendant of the Burg family, among the original settlers of New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, and Stonewall. He also cared deeply for his father, Gene, who shaped his appreciation of family and legacy. Growing up the son of a general contractor, Patrick never lost his passion for building and remodeling, often reimagining the family home of 59 years with plans barely dry before hammers were swinging.
He also found joy in the outdoors, spending countless days fishing with family in Aransas and Red Fish bays on his boat. More often than not, his father Gene out-fished him from the canals around their coastal home—something Patrick remembered with humor and pride.
Of all his blessings, he especially cherished being ‘Papa’ to his seven grandchildren, who filled his life with immeasurable joy.
Patrick is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Marguerite Pape, and his brothers, Eugene C. Pape, Jr. and Daniel T. Pape.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha Edwards Pape; his children Kevin and Lauren Pape, Kristina (Pape) and John Kellogg, Bryan and Kerry Pape; and his grandchildren Patrick Pape, Amber Kellogg, Erika Kellogg, Robert Kellogg, Addyson Pape, Dylan Pape, and Aubrey Pape. He is also remembered with love by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Honorary Pallbearers are Jerry Steed, Henry Christopher, Howard Hasting Jr., James Allison, Patrick Pape, and Robert Kellogg.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 15, 2025 at St. Anthony’s Church, with Father Kevin Shanahan, M.S.C. officiating. Following the service, the family warmly invites friends to join them at The Petroleum Club to share memories and fellowship.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to Kristina for her tireless and devoted care, which amazed and inspired all who witnessed it. Patrick especially recognized and appreciated his daughter’s valiant efforts and boundless love.
The family also wishes to thank Vitas Hospice for the compassionate support and comfort they provided to Patrick and his loved ones during his final days.
