Pete M. Martinez, a loving son, grandson, partner, brother, uncle, godfather, cousin, friend and proud Marine, was peacefully called home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the blessed age of 89 years with his family by his side. He was born April 2, 1936, in Karnes City, Texas to Francisca (Morales) and Paul Martinez Sr; he was one of ten children. Pete graduated from G.W. Brackenridge High School class of 1957 and was proud to be the first Hispanic male cheerleader.
He was welcomed into heaven with open arms and reunited with his loving parents; longtime partner, George Al Benavides; sisters, Elisa M. Gonzales, Matilda M. Gonzales, Mary Frances M. Lopez, Gloria M. Casillas; brothers, Steve Martinez Sr., Paul M. Martinez Jr. and Celedonio M. Martinez. Pete is survived by his loving brother, Rudy Martinez (John Pena) and sister, Irene M. Lopez (Art), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Special thanks to Pete’s nephew Arthur “Guero” Lopez Jr. (Maria) for their excellent care.
Pete led a fulfilling life characterized by his dedication to his country, family, and strong commitment to his faith. Throughout his service, he was recognized by the U.S. Marine Corps with the Good Conduct Medal. After honorable discharge he entered the workforce, working for Alamo Title Company, Lawyer’s Title, and ultimately retiring from US Title Company.
He had a strong passion for sports - playing softball, volleyball, and tennis during his service and on his company’s teams. He cheered on his favorite teams, the San Antonio Spurs, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Texas Rangers. He also took great joy in supporting his nieces and nephews in all of their athletic endeavors.
He enjoyed listening to Tejano, Conjunto, Country, Oldies, and Mariachi music, and he loved to dance. Pete also liked reading the newspaper and magazines, as well as watching game shows, sports channels, and movies on television. He especially treasured special occasions such as Fiesta, NIOSA, Coronation events, family gatherings, and spending time socializing with friends at El Jardine Bar and Gloria’s Bar.
