Peter was born into a large Polish Catholic family in Kosciusko, Texas in 1936. As a child, he helped on the family farm with cultivating crops and caring for livestock. From his youth, stories included his building fires in the woodstove at school so there would be heat, driving the school bus to the repair shop so it could be fixed, and serving as a Duke in the Floresville Peanut Festival. Peter would emotionally recall the terrible 1945 hurricane that took the roof off their home, very traumatic for a 9-year old boy. Neighbors and family came to help rebuild the roof and plant a quick crop of peanuts, which ended up being a bumper crop.
After graduation, Peter moved to San Antonio to begin working and was drafted into the Army as a forward artillery observer. During his service, he was stationed in Germany where he made many friends and memories at the bases and the biergartens. Following his time in the Army, he worked at Kelly Air Force Base where he specialized in calibrating aviation electronics. His technical acumen gave him the opportunity to travel across the US, Europe, and Japan for work.
Peter met his wife, Corinne Stehling, in San Antonio. Together they had four children - Elizabeth, Catherine, Peter, and Patrick. Although Peter was reserved, he showed, if not told, his love. He worked extra jobs for his children to attend Catholic school and to go to college, and he always prioritized Corinne. Out in the country, he picked Corinne pretty wildflower bouquets, which she cherished. The two loved to go to dances and to attend area festivals. They traveled throughout North America and Europe with their family enjoying the time together.
In his retirement, he stayed busy watching his grandchildren, raising cattle, growing fruits and vegetables in his many gardens, and running a bed-and-breakfast with his wife, Corinne, at her childhood homes in Fredericksburg. He was a kitchen aficionado, who loved to cook for his family and guests. When Corinne developed dementia, Peter personally took care of her until she grew too sick. During her last few months, he visited her every day to sit with her, keep her company, and hold her hand.
Outside of his faith and his family, Peter’s greatest passion was deer hunting. Growing up in the country, hunting was both very fun and very necessary. His father took him to shoot his first deer when he was 6, and he hunted every season through age 86. When he got married and had children, he spread his love for hunting to his sons, grandsons, sons-in-law, brothers-in-law, and nephews. He taught them how to hunt and process deer, and his recipes for sausage, salami, jerky, and venison marsala were featured in the San Antonio Express-News. His passion for hunting continues to be passed forward and to bring together his many loved ones. As hunting season starts this year, he will be missed dearly by everyone but the deer.
Peter is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Jendrzey, her husband Ed, and their three children, Anna, Gunnar, and Erik; daughter Catherine Berlanga, her husband Ed, and their two sons, Jack and Travis; son Peter Danysh; son Patrick Danysh, his wife Adriana, and their three children, Claudia, Charles, and William; sister, Suzanne Jendrzey, and her husband, George; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Corinne; parents, Joseph and Marcianna; and siblings, Clarence, Joseph, Florence, Dorothy, and Virginia.
