

Placida “Tootsie” Downing born on October 5, 1939, entered eternal rest on January 23, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born in the small town of Kenedy, Texas and was the beloved daughter of Demencio and Fella Villanueva.
Tootsie was preceded in death by her devoted husband Redus Downing, beloved son Raymond Vargas, her cherished great granddaughter Kimberly Treviño, and her siblings Frank Villanueva, Joe Villanueva, Mary Vargas, and Sara Garcia. Though sincerely missed, she is now reunited with them in God’s eternal presence.
A woman of strong and unwavering faith, Tootsie lived her life guided by prayer, humility and service. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. A true matriarch of the family. Her love and devotion were evident by the way she showed constant care of her family. Her giving heart, selfless acts and willingness to always lend a helping hand were unmatched.
Tootsie was known for her deep-rooted traditions, strong work ethic, and we can’t forget her cooking. This always brought the family together and created countless memories. She always placed other’s needs before her own. Her generosity, compassion and strong work ethic touched everyone she met, always leaving a lasting impression. We are all truly blessed to have met her and richer for having known her. Her life was a reflection of God’s love, grace and mercy demonstrating it through her actions and sacrifice.
She is survived by her siblings Lupe and Irma Villanueva, her loving children Raymond Vargas wife Yolanda, Cynthia Treviño husband Roland, David Vargas wife Rosie, and Mark Vargas wife Danisa. Her beloved grandchildren Stephanie, Roland Jr., Priscilla, Bobby, Chrissy, David Jr., Monica, Mark II, Nicholas, and Nicole. To include 33 great grandchildren, 5 great, great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Her wings were ready, but our hearts were not. Tootsie’s legacy of faith, love, family, and service will guide future generations moving forward. She will always have a special place in our hearts. We find comfort in knowing she is now walking the streets of gold with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Until we meet again…
The family will receive guests from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Porter Loring Mortuary West, with a Celebration of Life to follow at 7:00 p.m.
A Funeral Service will take place on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary West with a Committal Service to follow at San Fernando Cemetery III.
