Ralph Rafael Paul Pais passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2010, after a brief illness. He was born on December 29, 1929, on the east side of the city where his father, Paul, owned and operated P&G Grocery on Hackberry Street.
Ralph later worked in the store and knew every aspect of the grocery business. He attended St. Gerard and was a graduate of Central Catholic, St. Edward's University, and Monterrey Tech.
He served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the USS Boxer and was a warrant officer. Upon returning to San Antonio, he joined Maverick-Clark Printing Company, later Clark Printing, where he had a successful career for over fifty years.
For a brief time, he owned Continental Color Press but returned to Clark and became instrumental in developing business relations between Mexico and the US.
Ralph was a certified flight instructor and a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed flying, owned numerous planes, and often flew his family around Texas and to Mexico.
He enjoyed traveling and often boasted that he had visited 26 states in Mexico out of 31 including the Federal District. Although he was a native San Antonian, Ralph traced his ancestry to some of the first Spanish ranching families who settled south of the city near the Calaveras.
On June 11, 2010, Ralph and the love of his life, Doris Beigel Pais celebrated 60 years of marital bliss.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Paul G. and Mary Pamanes Pais. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife; his daughter, Alicia Pais Raizen and her husband, Dr. Mark Freiman-Raizen; his close friend, Edmond Van Brandt iii, two brothers, one sister and his best friends of 50+ years, Saturday Morning Taco Club.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Christus Santa Rosa who took extra special care in keeping him comfortable and to the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word for all their prayers and support.
