As a young man, he proudly served in the United States Army. He met his life-long love, Aurelia, in 1965. They married in September of 1966 and renewed their vows in January of 1986.
He worked for the City of San Antonio for over 25 years, which included Parks and Recreation, downtown Police Station, and the San Fernando Gym.
He and his wife often served the homeless at Sam’s Shelter and delivered Nena’s homemade tacos and blankets to the people who lived under the bridge. Aside from that, transients often found their way to Nena’s kitchen, for a homecooked meal and ministering.
Raul enjoyed keeping busy. Once retired, he volunteered his landscaping skills at St. John Berchman’s Church, where he was a life-long member. Even at the ripe age of 75+, he often volunteered to mow his neighbors’ yards, knowing they were in need. He loved to walk in the mornings with a group of buddies who met at Kennedy Park to walk and fellowship.
He was a loved and respected man of faith, known for his kindness, humor, and soft-spoken manner. He credited his relationship with the Lord, to his wife. Quoting scripture was a product of his daily, turned yearly, bible reading.
After his wife passed, Raul spent his time caring for his family and watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow. He loved music, dancing, home-cooked meals, laughter and family time.
He is preceded in death by his spouse, Aurelia (Nena) Siller Garai, son, Jesus Amado Garai, and Baby-Girl Garai.
He is survived by his daughters: Mary Jane Caldwell (Randal Caldwell), JoAnn Garai, Elizabeth Garai-Mainez, and son, Raul Garai Jr. His grandchildren are Peter J. Piontkowski, Ashley G. Uncapher, Gerald E. Montez, Adam M. Montez, Victoria L. Garai, Sara I. Mejia, Matthew L. Garai, Claudia M. Garai, Joshua J. Garai, and Olivia M. Mainez. His great grandchildren are Genevieve G. Uncapher, Felix R. Montez, Maverick A. Jones, A. Mozelle Uncapher, Maisey T. Jones, and J. Wyatt Uncapher.
Although he is dearly missed here, he is rejoicing in heaven with his loving wife, who he missed terribly.
