Raul "Roy" Ramirez, a humble, hardworking small-business owner, passed away on January 14, 2016 at the age of 85. His family and the Seraphic Sisters at St. Francis Nursing Home surrounded him on the evening of his passing.
He was born in San Antonio on April 16, 1930 to Jose and Sara Ramirez. At the age of 13, Roy quit school to help support his family and later married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Andrea, in 1949. Determined to fulfill his life-long dream of owning his own business, Roy opened Popo's Café-Mini Mart-Washateria in the late 1960s. For over 35 successful years, he served his customers in the heart of the Alta Vista Neighborhood and lived his dream. He was a quiet, strong man with a contagious laugh. He loved Las Vegas and was always up for a good boxing match. When he wasn't working, he was with his family.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Andrea, and his sister, Dora. Roy is survived by sons, Roy Ramirez, Jr. and wife Cindy, Rene Ramirez and wife Tammy; daughters, Elizabeth Andry, Norma Medrano, Yolanda Hansen and husband Bob, Teri Ramirez; grandchildren, Andy, Julie, Phillip, Analisa, Jason, Matt, Blake, and Kylie.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 19 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church, followed by a Rosary at 7:30 p.m.
