He and his family moved to Columbus, Ohio where he graduated from Columbus West High School. He served as a corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. His chosen career was the retail business and he spent 25 years with the F W Woolworth Co. During that time he became a member of Woolco Inc.
In 1964 he married Mary Carole Burns in Columbus, Ohio. They immediately moved to Corpus Christi, Texas and three years later to San Antonio. Here he managed the Woolco store on Gill Rd.

Ray loved San Antonio, the Spurs, fishing, playing golf, and barbecuing with family and friends. His hobbies were photography, painting and gardening. He most enjoyed watching his sons and later his grandchildren play sports. Throughout his battle with cancer the greatest dose of help for him was time spent with his grandchildren, who loved him dearly and who he deeply loved in return. Whether he was teasing them or impressing them with his “knowledge base”, this time spent would rejuvenate him and push him to fight harder. His love for his grandchildren and their love in return was the most sustaining medicine that he ever received.
