

Ray was born in San Antonio, Texas on March 29, 1960, to LtCol Ray Maurice Clapp and Joan Ellen Kennedy Clapp. He grew up in San Antonio and attended Alamo Heights High School. Ray was a tenacious athlete, a starting point guard for the Alamo Heights Basketball Team, and a football player. His parents were schoolteachers, and Ray had fond memories of their summers spent in Yellowstone National Park and Rockport, Texas. Ray earned his pilots license at age 18 and loved to fly. After graduating High School, he attended Princeton University where he received his bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering in 1982. He was a member of the University Cottage Club and played middle linebacker for Princetons Ivy League football team.
Rays first job after Princeton was at the Hercules Magnetic Oxide Plant in Pulaski, Virginia where he worked as an engineer and was promoted to assistant manager. He returned to Texas to earn his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Texas in 1987. He moved to Dallas, Texas where he worked as Director of Acquisitions for the Rosewood Corporation. He was a partner and CFO of Alamosa PCS, Inc, a telecommunications company which he helped to take public in 1999.
In 2003, Ray left Rosewood to spend more time with his family, though he continued to work as a private equity investor. Ray coached his sons YMCA football and basketball teams. He was an engaged and active leader in his sons Boy Scout Troop 72, where he influenced the lives of many. He served as Scout Master from 2006 to 2009, leading 30 to 50 fathers and sons on monthly campouts, and annual High Adventure backpacking, canoeing, and SCUBA diving trips to New Mexico, Minnesota, and Florida.
In 2013, Ray married his loving wife and soulmate, Marianne and moved to Athens, Texas. He was a caring father and mentor to Mariannes children. Once Mariannes children had finished high school Ray and Marianne returned to his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. There, Ray was an active member of MacArthur Park Church of Christ and a teacher in his study group. Ray was an avid outdoorsman and lightweight backpacker, and loved biking, running, flying, and sailing.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carol.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marianne; his sons, Benjamin C. Clapp and Ray M. Clapp III; his daughter- in-law, Mary A. Clapp, his stepchildren Jonathan Warren, Elizabeth Warren, Michael Warren, and Benjamin Warren; his sisters Donna Dove and Brenda Butler; his nephew, Gerald T. Drought; and his grandchildren Rhaenys A. Clapp and Briella Warren. He is also survived by his nieces Cathy Desoto, Tiffin Dove, Amy Dove, Christa Connor, Rachell Dove, Rory Doyle, several cousins, and by many devoted friends.
Visitation will be on Monday, January 3, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough Avenue.
The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the MacArthur Park Church of Christ, 1907 NE Interstate Loop 410, San Antonio, Texas, 78217.
