Rene Reyes Pena

René Reyes Peña, age 70, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born René Peña Reyes in the area of Las Tunas, Cuba to Lemencio Osvaldo Peña Suárez and Rosa Reyes Rivera. In Cuban tradition, the given name is followed by the paternal last names of the father and mother. He was a man of two names and two cultures.

May 29, 1980, René came to the United States. After first arriving to the U.S., he spent time in different states, including Wisconsin and California, before establishing himself in Texas. In the 1990s, René reconnected with his Cuban family. He returned for the first time to his native island on July 14, 1998. Afterwards, he started traveling regularly to visit. On March 13, 2008, he became a naturalized U.S. American citizen. Soon after, he gained dual citizenship.

In San Antonio, René met his wife of 39 years at a night club, El Armadillo. He enjoyed dancing and listening to music, especially salsa and boleros. In the early 1980s, René was a cook at Cappy’s Restaurant. Cooking was one of his favorite things to do. Many people will remember the food he made, such as the pig roasts, congri, yuca, boniato, and shrimp frituritas. He also embraced the freedom of the open road. He started to learn how to drive big trucks when working at Pioneer and went to school to earn his CDL to drive 18-wheelers. The majority of his professional career was as a long-haul truck driver, owner-operator. He drove many years for Bee Trucking, LLC and Trucks for You, Inc. He traveled to every U.S. state, except for Alaska, Hawaii, and Montana. His last drive was from Florida to Texas December 2020. During the last couple of years of his life, he lived at home in retirement.

René is survived by his wife, Catalina Vela Peña and many family members and friends in the United States and Cuba. He leaves behind his legacy and impact on those with whom he crossed paths.

René Reyes Peña, de 70 años de edad, falleció el domingo 5 de febrero de 2023 en San Antonio, Texas. Nació René Peña Reyes en la zona de Las Tunas, Cuba, hijo de Lemencio Osvaldo Peña Suárez y Rosa Reyes Rivera. En la tradición cubana, el nombre de pila va seguido de los apellidos paternos del padre y la madre. Era un hombre de dos nombres y dos culturas.

El 29 de mayo de 1980, René llegó a Estados Unidos. Tras llegar a Estados Unidos, pasó un tiempo en estados diferentes, entre ellos Wisconsin y California, antes de establecerse en Texas. En la década de 1990, René se reencontró con su familia cubana. Regresó por primera vez a su isla natal el 14 de julio de 1998. Después, empezó a viajar con regularidad para visitarla. El 13 de marzo de 2008 se nacionalizó estadounidense. Poco después, obtuvo la doble nacionalidad.

En San Antonio, René conoció a su esposa de 39 años, en un club nocturno llamado El Armadillo. Le gustaba bailar y escuchar música, especialmente salsa y boleros. A principios de los 80, René era cocinero en Cappy's Restaurant. Cocinar era una de sus actividades favoritas. Mucha gente recordará la comida que hacía, como los asados de cerdo, el congri, la yuca, el boniato, y las frituritas de gambas. También le gustaba la libertad de la carretera. Empezó a aprender a conducir grandes camiones cuando trabajaba en Pioneer y fue a la escuela para obtener su CDL para conducir camiones de 18 ruedas. La mayor parte de su carrera profesional fue como conductor de camiones de larga distancia, propietario-operador. Condujo muchos años para Bee Trucking, LLC y Trucks for You, Inc. Viajó a todos los estados de EE.UU., excepto Alaska, Hawai, y Montana. Su último viaje fue de Florida a Texas en diciembre de 2020. Durante el último par de años de su vida, vivió en casa retirado.
