Reverend Robert Edward Bayer, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Muncie, Indiana, on August 15, 1935 to Flossie Pearl Pemberton and Robert Otis Bayer. He graduated from Muncie Central High where he was on the football, track, and wrestling teams with athletic accolades. He also attended Purdue University. He answered his call to the ministry and evangelism at age 18, and eventually became a member of the United Pentecostal Church, preaching the gospel for 70 years until his passing. He pastored along with his bride Ann Robertson Bayer in Indiana, Florida, and California. He’s had the privilege of being known as “The Walking Bible” due to his committal of scripture memorization, and love of nature and walking. He authored the “Titles of Jesus” in 1974, and it was an ongoing endeavor as he continued to search the scriptures daily for more titles of Jesus. This project resulted in his notable sermon “The Incomparable Christ.” His love of scriptures was shared all over the US and internationally at conferences, camp meetings, and special services, inspiring many to also commit God’s Word to memory. Since 2012, he was honored to be on the ministry staff at Hope Center Church in San Antonio, Texas, pastored by Rev. Nathan Scoggins. He loved touching the people of Hope Center with prayer and counsel, and the people cherished this time with him.
He was profiled in former President Clinton’s biography. He met President Clinton and was invited to the White House after ministering at Arkansas Camp Meeting in 1982 where the president had attended as then Arkansas Governor.
He was preceded in death by parents; siblings William Denby Bayer, Roy Bayer (his twin and infant brother Ray Bayer), Bertha Faye Johnson, and Ruth Naomi Bayer. Robert is survived by devoted wife Ann Bayer; daughters Cheri Bayer, Candace Bayer, Camilla English (Dr. William English), and Caroline Bayer; grandchildren Christina Weldy, Garrison English, Alex English, and Christian English; and brother Ray Reasor Bayer.
