Richard V. Sanchez was born December 22, 1914 and went home to the Lord on February 12, 2011. As he often said "I'm not afraid to take my chances with a merciful Lord." Richard was a life-long resident of San Antonio.
He was a graduate of the first 1933 senior class of Thomas Jefferson H.S., a WWII veteran Philippine campaign, commercial artist for the Staffels Co., political aspirant, and a controversial and often humorous writer of letters to the editor.
In the 1950's Richard was the first officially registered Mexican-American Republican in Bexar County and Republican Precinct Chairman for his Precinct for many years. Paul Thompson, legendary columnist for The Express-News, referred to him as "The poor man's Republican".
Richard was inducted into the Bexar Country Republican Hall of Fame in 2003. He was chairman of the Republican Mexican-American Advisory Committee during the Nixon administration. He served two tempestuous 4-year terms as member of the S. A. Public Library Board.
While running for City Council and with help from the E-N Sports Editor helped to make public use of Lake Braunig a reality. He was Chairman of the LULAC Scholarship Committee No. 2 and brought for the first time a Republican, Senator John Tower the little giant to speak before the LULAC's in 1965.
His beloved wife, Berta, preceded him in death in September of 2004.
He is survived by his two sons, Richard A. Sanchez and Robert Sanchez and his wife Lona, his sister Aurora Hernandez, five grandchildren, John, Richie, Robbie, Daniel and Nathan and various great-grandchildren including Mazie and Matthew Sanchez. He is also survived by his two nieces, Rachel Hernandez Jones and Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier.
