Dick was born on October 15th, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan to parents Earl J Tinsman and Dorothe Hunn Tinsman, but as a teen the family moved to San Antonio, Texas.
Dick attended Alamo Heights High School, the University of Texas in Austin, where he received both his bachelor’s and law degrees, graduating with honors.
Dick served in the United States Army. Later, in 1957, he began his career as a distinguished attorney and litigator, earning the nickname “Tiger” for his aggressive approach to fighting legal battles on behalf of his clients.
His accomplishments included founding multiple law firms as a named partner, most notably Tinsman & Sciano (originally Tinsman & Houser, then Tinsman, Scott, and Sciano); arguing two cases before the US Supreme Court; taking leadership roles in multiple professional attorneys’ associations, founding other businesses and serving God through his charitable work.
Dick is survived by his loving wife Jolie Tinsman; his sons and stepchildren Troy Franklin Tinsman (Laura), Mark Tinsman, Shawn Schaefer (Evelyn), and Stephanie Schaefer O’Connell (Kerry); his grandchildren Briana and Ryne Schaefer, Liam Nix, and Flynn, Grace, and Eleanor O’Connell; and his sister Trudy Field. Dick was predeceased by his parents; by his sister, Janice Olsen; and by his two previous wives who also brightened his life before passing: Rosemary Cray Tinsman and Nancy Winburn Tinsman.
His leisure time was most often devouring a book. He loved family, attending Spurs games, piloting a plane, boating, water skiing, and traveling the far corners of the world.
The family is eternally grateful for the loving care he received from all of the selfless workers in the Memory Care Unit at Heartis Senior Facility San Antonio.
